"Did you need something, Red?" I asked, pulling on my boots.
"I had a nightmare last night," he said quietly. "About Shadow."
That got my attention. I stopped what I was doing and looked closely at him. "What's wrong?"
"He...He said he doesn't want you to help him." He started looking at the floor. "And he called you a traitor and said if he ever saw you, he'd kill you."
"But," I said, trying to think of a reason he would say that while I searched for words I could say. "I've seen him twice now. And not once has he gotten violent, or told me he wanted to stay dead, what's with the sudden change?"
Red locked eyes with me. "I'm sorry, Vio. he wanted me to talk you out of helping him, and I...don't think he was serious about the killing you part, but he really seemed to want to be left alone." He started fiddling with his hands, and I couldn't think straight.
I sat back down on my bed and stared at the hard wooden floors. "He...couldn't have said that..." I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. "We're still going. And if tonight I see him again and he tells me any of these things, we'll just turn back around, I...I need to see him. I need to help him."
Red nodded and hugged me, apologizing again. I hugged back tightly. I hadn't been aware of just how desperately I wanted him back and now...he didn't want to be back.
Makes sense, though, I thought bitterly. I betrayed him. Why would he want mt anywhere near him after that?
