"I'm so sorry," she said. And I realized why she looked so sad.
"You...you aren't..."
Aki's eyes were wide and I think she bit the guy holding her's hand because he yanked it away. "Era!"
She looked over at her. "Hello, Aki," she said softly. "I owe an apology to you too."
"What are you apol—" He clamped his hand over her mouth again, cutting her off. She turned towards Vio.
"You stay away from him!" I shouted before I was even aware.
She didn't even glance at me, already stepping towards him. "He knows."
"Know what?" He said, glaring at her. Era flinched.
"About the Dark Mirror, the Mirror of Twilight, all sorts of things you shouldn't know about." She reached forward and grabbed his forearm and I was already shouting threats at her.
I wasn't sure how I knew, but I knew what she was doing, and I knew what would happen. "Era, don't you fucking dare! get away from him! She placed two fingers on his wrist, checking for a pulse. Vio kept trying to pull his arm out of her grip, but I had a feeling she was stronger than I thought because his arm stayed in place until she let go and the person holding Vio yanked his arm back behind him.
"I will fucking murder you and drag your body into the woods!" I shouted at her, totally forgetting we were already in the woods.
"He's alive," she said, facing me, but she wasn't looking at me, but at someone behind me, but not the person holding me.
"Great, that's going to make things a lot easier."
I didn't know who responded, but I hated them and I hated her.
I opened my mouth to say something, but the person behind me shoved me forward. I spat out the dirt that landed in my mouth and almost pushed myself up—but then I felt someone stab me.
I screamed, and Aki started thrashing much more violently. Vio's eyes had widened and he glared at Era, as if he knew that she was to blame for this.
She betrayed me, I realized. I trusted her, but she's with them. ...Probably doesn't help I killed her.
I was mostly just aware that blood was soaking my tunic, I didn't process the person yanking a blade out of me.
I was stabbed, I was bleeding and to anyone else, that'd be fatal, but I was already dead. Didn't make it enjoyable or anything, but it did make it pointless, even though something pointy had definitely just been in my upper back and chest.
Era looked at Vio, almost seeming bored. She didn't spare a glance at me. "You've been reading that book," she said.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Do you want your boyfriend to die?"
"What?" He visibly paled.
"I can't die, you...idiot," I said, searching for a swear word. But Aki was over there and I didn't want to swear anymore around her than I already had.
I got stabbed again, but I miraculously was able to stifle my scream.
"Let me rephrase the question—do you hate him?"
Vio looked over at me. "I..."
"Do you want him to suffer? Answer, or he's just gonna get impaled again, I have all day."
"No," Vio said. "Please, just...don't hurt him."
"You just have to tell us the truth and we won't. Do you know where the pieces of the Dark Mirror are?" Vio looked at me and then back at her.
