Skie Matthews got out of the car behind her sister and looked at the large brick school looming over her.
"I don't think I want to go here." She murmured.
Raven heard her, and in a moment of protectiveness, squeezed her shoulder gently.
"Hey, it's gonna be ok, ok?"
"Thanks, Ray." Skie whispered.
The two sisters stood for a moment looking at the doors until their mother got their attention. "Ready to grab your bags, girls?"
The moment was broken. Raven hurried over to get her suitcase while Skie looked for a moment longer, then turned away to get hers.
"Raven, you know where your room is, right?"
"Yes, mum."
"Good. I'll take Skie to the office to get everything settled."
Raven nodded and the three headed towards the entrance.
Mrs. Matthews sighed. "I wish your Dad could be here to drop you off, but you know how it is."
"Yeah, I know work is important." Raven said with only a hint of disappointment in her voice. Skie said nothing.
Once inside, Raven departed down the hall to find her new dorm, and Skie and her mom headed for the Headmistress' office.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Hello, Mrs. Matthews. And you must be Skylar?" The headmistress stood up to shake hands with the two newcomers.
"Yes, Ma'am." Skie said shyly.
"Do you prefer Skylar or Skie?"
"Skie, if you please Ma'am."
The headmistress nodded and smiled at the clearly nervous little girl.
"We have all the paperwork in, Mrs. Matthews. I believe you got a letter with Skie's dorm room and the handbook, of course?"
"Yes, we did."
The headmistress looked at the paper she was holding, then down at Skie. "You were expelled from your last school?"
Skie looked at the desk and quietly said, "Yes Ma'am."
The two women looked at the little girl and exchanged glances. The headmistress spoke again, kindly.
"I trust that you have learned from the experience, and I am sure this year will be better for you. If you have any problems, my office is always open, and our head girl is also happy to help."
Skie looked up, grateful at not being yelled at. "Thank you, Ma'am."
The intercom buzzed on the desk. The headmistress picked up. "Yes?"
"The elder Miss Matthews and Miss Jamison are outside. Would you like me to send them in?"
"Excellent timing." The headmistress remarked conversationally to Skie and her mother, then spoke into the phone, "Go ahead."
The door opened. Skie looked and saw, besides her sister, a tall, tan girl with long brown ringlets and deep brown eyes looking at her. The girl was already in uniform, and a glittering badge that read Head Girl was pinned to her blazer.
"Hello. Skie, right?"
Skie nodded mutely.
"Pleased to meet you." The girl said. "My name is Hazel Jamison."
AN: Please leave a comment! Next up, Skie gets settled into her dorm and has a talk with Hazel.
