"How the hell did they know where to find us?" I asked Dom.
"I don't know, look! There they are!" he said, pointing ahead to a car that drove into the brush.
"Hurry up Leon!" I said.
"You stay here." Dom said when I told Leon to get out of my way.
"The hell I am." I replied, running over to Brian, Mia and Vince.
"What the hell happened to you?" Brian asked worriedly, rubbing my cheek.
"Car flipped, Vince! Come on man, you're stronger than this." I said, trying to think of a way to help.
"Come on Vince, hang in there! Come on! If we don't get him to an ambulance in 10 minutes he's dead." Brian told Dom when he got to us.
"Dom . . ." I cried.
"Hold this Charlie. Hold the pressure, just like that." Brian told Mia.
"I got it." she said.
"Don't let go, Charlie, hold his arm up." Brian ordered.
"I got it." I told him.
"Vince . . ." Mia sobbed.
I noticed Brian pulling out his cell phone but I didn't pay much attention until I heard what he had to say.
"Yeah, yeah, this is officer Brian O'Connor, I'm off-duty LAPD . . ."
I raised my head slowly, looking at him in shock. He looked at me with an unreadable look in his eyes and all I could do was feel my heart breaking. I looked over at Mia who shot me a sympathetic look and then at Dom who had a pissed off look on his face. He's a cop, Vince was right the whole time.
". . . I need a life flight roll out right away. My 20 is Highway 86, mile marker 147. I got one trauma victim, about 24 years of age, six-foot, maybe 200 pounds. He's got a real deep laceration to his right arm with arterial bleeding and he's got a shotgun wound close range to his left flank. Yeah, he's going into shock!" Brian shouted at the end, snapping me out of my little trip.
We stood with him until the chopper arrived, Mia got the hospital information from one of the paramedics before walking away. I was not entirely here, my heart was with Mia and Vince, broken at the same time. I was a bit further away from the chopper, giving her some time with him before they took him away.
When the doors closed Brian looked up at me and took a step my way. I could feel the tears falling when I looked back at Dom, I couldn't really hear what he was saying but I knew. I looked back over at Brian who had a pain-filled look but it couldn't possibly beat mine. Dom was still shouting, telling me to get over to the car right now.
I did what I was supposed to do, I ran over to Leon's car and hopped in. During the car ride back I tried to sleep and when I couldn't I pretended to be asleep. There was silence for a long time until everyone started talking at once.
"What are we gonna do about Charlie?" Mia asked.
"I can't believe the guy's a cop." Leon said.
"I'm worried about her Dom." Mia said.
"I don't know, we've gotta leave." he said.
"You can't possibly expect us to leave you - leave her - alone after this." Letty argued.
"He said that he loved her." Mia said suddenly.
"What?" Dom asked.
"He said that he loved her, that everything he said to her was real. That's why he wanted my help to find you. Local authorities are coming down on you soon and the truckers aren't holding back as we all noticed. He cared about us and wanted to make sure you all made it home. Brian was scared shitless when he realized that she was with you, I think he does love her." she replied.
