"You okay?" Monica asked, sounding honestly worried.
"Him." I managed to say.
"Who?"
"The guy who just pulled up."
"What about him?" she asked, confused as hell.
"He's the guy we want." I sighed.
"How do you know that?"
"I know him, we've got somewhat of a history."
"What kind of history?"
"None of your damn business, I'm leaving cause I don't want him to see me just yet but he's definitely the guy that Carter needs. We're just one short, good night." I said, walking away before the tears could fall.
Damn him, damn Brian O'Conner to hell and back. I want to be over him, I want to get him out of my head and out of my heart but just seeing him again is enough to bring all of those emotions back. Its the effect that he has over me and I'm really pissed about it.
I drove straight back to the compound and went straight to my room, not wanting to deal with anyone right at the moment. Carter knows my moods and respects them so when I blew past him he just raised his hands and let me walk right by him.
Damn Brian O'Conner.
My old cell phone started ringing and I ran to grab it from my nightstand drawer. Only two people call this number and I was dying to hear from them.
"Hello?" I frantically asked.
"Charlie."
"Dom . . ." I sighed.
"How you doing?" he asked.
"Better now, how are you?"
"I'm good, safe. Are you still in the same place?"
"Yeah, working with a friend."
"What's wrong? I can hear it in your voice."
"It's nothing important right now, I'll deal with it later. Have you heard from Mia?"
"She's doing good, they're safe too. She's gonna call you tomorrow."
"That's good, that's really good. What about Letty? Leon?"
"Haven't heard from them, I don't expect to hear from Leon anyway. He disappeared just as mysteriously as he appeared, its the way he does things."
"I love you, you need to hang up now."
"I do, I'll be settling in soon somewhere else. You'll have a steady number but you can't . . ."
"I can't call unless its an emergency, I know. Be safe, love you."
"Love you more, be careful. Bye Charlie."
These calls, no matter how short or sporadic make me feel so much better. Knowing that my siblings, they're more than cousins because we were raised as siblings and we love each other that way, but anyway, knowing that they're safe means the world to me. These calls give me strength in a way that nothing else can.
About three days had passed before I had any news about Brian. The racers were all meeting here and I had to wonder if Monica did what I told her to. I was wondering about who he's bringing with him as well.
"Hey, I want you out there." Carter said, walking into the office.
He had me set up in an office most of the time. I know that he does illegal shit but I take care of his legitimate company. I work for the import/export business, which does work with legal products from the Latin countries. It's something that I'm proud to work on with him. Then I find racers on the side.
