- chapter five -

"Do you want to meet up for dinner?" A low and kind voice spoke through.

"Eh? Really?!" [Y/N]'s smile started to widen. "Sure! I was gonna ask the same question, hehe."

"Alright then," He kept his voice calm and collected. "I'll meet you at your office in thirty minutes."

"Huh? You're already done with work?"

"Mhm, plus, my pay came in this week. I, uh," He almost wanted to ask her to forget what he just said, but he knew he couldn't keep doing that forever. "I want to treat you today. You said you finished settling their wallpapers a few days ago, right?"

[Y/N] wasn't surprised that he'd remember the little details she told him over their usual phone call a few days ago. After all, it's the little details Kenma remembers that makes him so amazing as a friend. Whenever there were any inconsistencies in her words, he'd be the one to call it out immediately.

"Y-Yeah, we're pretty much done here." [Y/N] grew soft from remembering what had happened with Kuroo those few days ago. She thanked the gods that she was talking to him through a phone. Surely he wouldn't be able to detect anything from a phone call, right?

"Great, then I'll see you there."

They've said their goodbyes and hung up on each other.

'Hm,' Kenma pondered as he walked towards the railway station. 'I wonder if she'll enjoy some yakitori tonight. She sounded exhausted and tired from work just now.'

He smiled thinking of how [Y/N]'s face would light up upon eating her favourite kebab sticks. It even made him chuckle. It's been quite a while since they last met up, so Kenma was reasonably excited about seeing her. He just hoped she returned the same amount of excitement.

After they met up, Kenma decided to take her to a shop near her house called Torihana. It was a bit pricey, but Kenma already assured [Y/N] not to worry about it. He did want to treat her, after all. Even though [Y/N] asked for the reason, because according to her, nothing special happened to either of them that week, Kenma just shrugged and said he "felt like it".

As they were devouring the delicious meat, they were finally able to have a proper catch up on their lives. The distant chatter from the other customers, the warm seats, and the cooling beer they had just made the perfect atmosphere for them to be talking in. The used-to-be deep red chicken had already turned brown, but [Y/N] couldn't see that. The only thing she could see was Kenma's fluffy hair that was ever the same since high school. Other than that, even his work outfit, she couldn't see anything. Of course, being so used to that, it didn't make her uncomfortable one bit.

If anything, it was the weird presence of colours that made her feel uneasy. Especially since Kuroo and her weren't on the same page for god knows how long.

"Is your game finally working?" She looked into his eyes before taking a bite into the food.

"If you mean if I've finished the first stage, then yes," Kenma took a huge bite of the chicken liver. He took a second to chew before continuing his sentence. "The team's working hard on it, so hopefully that newbie who joined won't fuck us up."

"Ooh, Kenma swearing? That's a first~" [Y/N] teased. "Is the newbie that bad?"

"No, she's quite talented. But she can't work with people." He ended his sentence, hoping that little information could summarise how he feels about her.
