Derek's POV
I couldn't believe what Logan said, to be honest. I wasn't mad, if anything, I was jealous of her. Mr. Watkins never listened to me, and she got away with it saying all that. Maybe she was better than I thought to start. I had waited for her and told the boys that they'd have to go so we could talk. When she came out, we had a great talk and it was pretty cool. We found out that we had a lot of classes together, and we were both excited about that. I couldn't wait for lunch, we'd be able to talk a lot more, hopefully. I walked her to the class we didn't have together before lunch, and was able to barely make it to mine in time. I was so happy that I had a new Christian friend, and was even happier that it was Logan.
Cameron talked to a girl, she had helped him do that, and that was awesome. After that class, he went up to Maggie, a really nice, quiet bookworm that he had liked for a while, and talked to her for a while. She was going to sit with him at lunch and I guessed that they'd be going on a date soon. I got to lunch and looked around for Logan. She was in line already and I laughed. Evidently she wasn't joking about liking good and being hungry. I walked up to her, and she had saved me a spot in line. I jumped in next to her without anybody noticing and we got our lunch. I led her to "our table" where me and the guys usually sat. We were able to fit Cameron's new friend, Maggie in, along with Logan and the rest of the guys. We started to eat, and talk.
"So, Logan, where'd you move to?" Jaden asked me.
Logan finished her mouthful of the school pizza. "Well, Anthony's brother, Trey, he got a job here, and it's a long story that I'll tell you sometime other than lunch, when I don't have important things to do..." She pointed to her food and everyone laughed. "But basically they both were going to move and mine and James' parents wanted us to go with and have a new "experience" with them. Miguel, our unofficially adopted brother, moved too. So we're living with Trey a couple blocks down from Main Street. On Frontier road I think?"
We all nodded while shoving out faces full of food and Logan kept eating. We talked a little more, getting to know each other better, when Jaden groaned.
"Derek... look who's coming back." Cameron tore his attention away from Maggie and groaned too. Maggie rolled her eyes, not at Cameron, but at the girl coming toward me, Laura. She was all fake and make up and in the latest style, kind of skimpy clothes that I hated. I knew this wouldn't be good already. Logan looked confused, and so after sighing angrily and I explained a little right before she came to me. "Mean girl." Logan made an O shape with her mouth and then Laura was there. She sat down on my lap and put her arm around my shoulders. I smelled some terrible perfume that was way overboard and tried not to gag.
I tensed up and pulled away, making her pout a little, "Oh, Derek," she said with a totally fake voice, which also happened to annoy me already. "What's wrong?"
I gave her a sarcastic smile "Besides the fact I have something gross on my lap, Laura, nothing. Nothing at all." Logan laughed at my sarcasm and I gave her a small smile, glad I could make her laugh in my embarrassment.
Laura, glared at Logan. "What are you sitting with?" She asked me. I noticed she didn't even call me a "who", Logan was a "what", according to Laura.
"Why aren't you sitting with me instead of this group of lousy nobodies."
I gave her an unamused look, "First off, Logan and the rest of these guys are my friends, people with actual personalities. Nice ones too. And I happen to like them." I smiled at Logan and she smiled back. "Second off, that was really rude, and I don't like rude people."
She gave an innocent smile, making me want to gag. "I'm not being rude, Derek, I'm just being realistic!" I glared at her, and noticed Logan laughing out loud, not even trying to hold it in.
Laura shot her a venomous look that Logan shrugged off, still laughing. Logan stood up after she stopped laughing and walked over to Laura and pulled her off of me. I sat there, surprised and grateful. Logan stood her up and crossed her arms after making a show of wiping her hands off as if she just touched something gross, which she kinda did, then she talked. "Laura, or whatever your name is, Derek obviously doesn't want to talk to you right now. I'm pretty sure none of this table wants to actually so I suggest you go over and bother some shallow jock that is shallow, like your personality. Derek here actually has a personality, and he's too good for you. You may need to get used to that before you look for another guy."
Jaden laughed so hard, he was rolling on the ground, and a lot of the kids in the lunch room were paying attention and holding back laughs so that they could hear. Logan day back down and started eating again.
Laura stood there in shock, no one had ever talked to her like that before. She finally came up with something to say, "That was rude!" She pouted like a spoiled, little kid.
Logan laughed a little and turned around in her seat. "Hey, what can I say? I'm not being rude, I'm being realistic." She shoved the rest of her pizza in her mouth and she had emphasized the last sentence, taking it straight from Laura. The whole lunchroom erupted with laughs and giggles. Jaden sat up from the ground, barely breathing from laughing so hard, "Reality check for Laura." He said loudly and we all laughed. Laura stomped away, and I started to laugh a little. Not as much as Jaden, but still laughing. Logan looked at me horrified after the lunchroom had calmed down. I was confused about what she'd be horrified about so I asked her.
"Derek, that was really rude. I can't believe it!"
I cocked my head, being confused again, "Yeah, that's Laura for you."
She shook her head, looking worried now. "No, I was really rude. I was acting just like she would have. It's not going to help anything." She put her head in her hands and stared down at the table.
I slid closer to her, not knowing what boundaries there were since we still didn't really know each other. I patted her back awkwardly and sighed, "Honestly, I don't know what to say to that. I guess that it wasn't the best way we could've responded, but I know you're not perfect. Maybe you could talk to her again?" She looked up at me, with a face that said "really?" And I shrugged, "Maybe soon, while she's still got a little bit of embarrassment and humility in her." Logan nodded and smiled at me. I returned a friendly smile. She as really nice and I was really happy with that. I put a personal reminder in my head not to make her mad though. She stood up and grabbed her tray. "I'll take care of your tray, you go find her."
She nodded and gave me a half smile after taking a nervous breath. "Thanks."
And with that she walked away to find Laura. This girl was something else.
