Derek's POV (started that morning)

I woke up thinking "Yay, just another boring day in the life of Derek Mason. Another day of school, sports, other stuff, and people trying to kill my father. Just great." Soon I would find out it wouldn't be as boring as I thought.

I woke up at 6 and rolled out of bed to take a shower. The cold water on my face woke me up and when I was done, I was ready to make this day count. I grabbed some clothes, a nice blue T-shirt and some dark jeans. I found my favorite Nike tennis shoes, they were blue with a black Nike swoosh. I looked at my calendar planner, I had school then I had football practice then I was working at the soup kitchen with a couple of friends. Pretty boring and typical day. The most fun thing would be the soup kitchen. I liked talking to the people there and being able to help them, despite my "status" or whatever people call it. I didn't understand why it mattered if you had a famous father or the coolest clothes or the most money. None of those things mattered or lasted. God wants us to be nice to everyone, no matter what they're popularity is. So that's what I was going to do, and I decided that when I was about 9 or 10.

I did struggle with sticking with that when my dad became governor. But he was a great encouragement and I stuck with it. I hoped more people could see that and be able to help.

I ran down the stairs to make some breakfast. I looked in the fridge and saw some eggs and ham. So I grabbed it along with some milk and stirred it all together into a skillet. The smell had my parents down the stairs in a couple minutes. I grinned when I saw them. "It's almost ready. Where's Ethan?"

As if on cue, my older brother walked downstairs, and I could tell he just woke up. I smiled at him and flipped the eggs and ham that I was making. I put a couple pieces of bread in the toaster and Mom got some plates and silverware out while Dad moved stuff out of the way so we could eat. Ethan sat down, and drank a glass of cold water.

I grabbed the eggs and dished up the eggs and put a piece of toast on each plate. I set it out and Dad prayed for he meal. We ate and we dumped our dishes into the sink. Everyone dispersed to get ready for the day and I took my time. I walked down the stairs with excitement. I didn't know what I was excited for, I just kind of had a feeling. I decided to get to school early today. I called up the stairs to say bye to everyone and Ethan came out, buttoning up a shirt.

"Hey, Derek, see you later." He said and turned around to finish getting ready. I laughed and he turned around quickly. "What?"

I shook my head, "Well, first off, did you not sleep well? Cuz the second problem is that your shirt is on inside out and you messed up the buttons. Does Mom need to help you get ready again?" I teased and he laughed. I loved my older brothers laugh. I wanted to be like him when I was older. He was like my role model and I really looked up to him. We had an amazing brotherly relationship so it made me happy that he worked at the same school as I went to.

I said bye and left for school. On my way, a black limo with flags on the front and no license plates passed me. I couldn't see in any of the windows though so I just ignored it. I got to school and walked around a little. There were a couple kids walking around the outside of the school. 3 boys and a girl, and the girl was leading them, pointing at something on it in the school. I didn't recognize them, so I just ignored them and went to see if any of my friends were there yet. I saw Marcus and Cameron so I got ready to walk to them.

"Hey! Derek!" Cameron called to me, waving. I grinned and walked over. "Did you hear? We're getting a couple new students. And Mr. Davis wants us to show 'em around sometime and help them if we need to. He said that we have a lot of classes with them. I think they're all guys, sadly. There's a James and a Miguel and a Logan I think them another one. I laughed at Cameron. He was wanting to meet some girls because someone told him he was too sheltered and had never talked to a girl before. So he made it his mission for this year to be able to talk to a girl like a normal person. He got really nervous around them which was sometimes funny, but I felt bad for him too. I tried helping him but he always backed out last minute.
