Logan's POV (two-ish years later)
I hadn't talked to Derek in a couple days. We weren't exactly dating because I still wasn't allowed to see him very often, less than once a month usually. We talked when we could, and I still talked to his family, who had become like my second family. Ethan had gotten married. I couldn't go because of security, but I watched it in a video thing like FaceTime.
James was still at the agency, but he had small missions about every week. Mainly checking in on things. He was doing good and moving up at the agency.
It was my birthday, September 14, and I knew I should expect something at the agency, but I wasn't prepared for what I saw when I got there. I walked in the doors, giving my security things and checking in. I walked in to report to Captain Sanders but he wasn't there. There was note on his door saying he had a emergency and that I was to train for a little then go home. I went to the gym and as soon as I opened the doors, a bunch of people jumped out at me either streamers and noise things and all sorts of stuff. I smiled as I looked around. There was James, his girlfriend soon to be fiancé, Tasha, Emilia, Calianda, Anthony, Miguel, the rest of the agency families that were around, a couple cops or other people I'd worked with before, Captain Sanders.... my jaw dropped and I froze. The Mason family was there, all of them, including Ethan and his wife. Derek grinned and Shauna and Walker were grinning from ear to ear like Ethan. I ran to them and Walker caught me in a hug. He set me down and Shauna gave me a huge hug, with joyful tears running down her face. I have Ethan a fist bump and a grin, and he laughed. I turned to face Derek, and he took a step closer to me to close the gap and gave me my favorite hug. I buried myself into his chest, smelling his familiar scent: Old Spice and coffee. It confused me because he didn't drink coffee, but he always smelled like it. But, hey, I wasn't complaining. He had gotten bigger, stronger, and looked more mature with a partial beard that matched his brother's.
"I missed you so much." We said at the same time and burst out laughing.
Captain Sanders walked up to me with the happiest smile I'd ever seen him have. "Logan, meet your new partner, Agent Derek Mason." He said proudly. Derek grinned with a smile so big I thought his face would split.
"Wait what? You're an agent?" I exclaimed.
He nodded. "What can I say? You're inspiring." I laughed and everyone around did too. I didn't believe him that that was the real reason.
After the party had started and people weren't only paying attention to me, I talked to everyone there. I made my way around, saving Derek for last. When I finally made it to him, he pulled at my hand. "Show me around or something. We need to talk."
I followed him and we walked out the door to the left, side by side. We just walked quietly for a while, except for the occasional, "That's the..." from me, describing what each place was.
We had made a loop over one whole wing of the building, so I turned to him as we stopped at the end of the wing. "So why'd you really become an agent, Derek? You haven't told me the real story."
He shrugged and took one of my hands. "Because I wanted to be with you." He said simply.
"Well, we can see each other even if you're not an agent, ya know."
He shook his head. "No. I want to be with you, like a lot," and I was confused. "Logan, I'm wondering if you'd be my girlfriend. I like you a lot and want to see what God has for me and you, together."
I couldn't stop the smile on my lips; it just came naturally. "I'd like that, Derek." He wrapped me in a hug and I laughed and hugged him back. When he let me down, I grinned at him, "You wanna know a secret?"
He shrugged. "What?"
I fidgeted with my hands for a second, not knowing how to word my secret. "Um.... Well, I don't like hugs. In fact, I kinda hate them."
He laughed and I pushed him a little. "I'm serious! Everyone thinks I love them and all that, but honesty, I just don't understand them! It just doesn't make sense!" I exclaimed to him.
He grinned and shrugged, "Well, now that I know that..." he trailed off and grabbed me in another hug. I didn't fight it, but I didn't embrace it either and I could tell he was laughing without looking at him. I looked up at him to see him grinning from ear to ear devilishly. "You better hug me back otherwise I will go tell everyone to give you hugs. And I'm not bluffing." I rolled my eyes, attempting to hide my smile, but I knew he could probably see it. I put my arms around him and hugged him.
Derek didn't stop grinning. He acted like he had just won a million dollars, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's what he thought had just happened. He was so joyful about it all, his mood was contagious and caught on to me, and later to everyone else he was around, mainly the ones he told. His family and my friends and James were super excited about it, although none of them seemed surprised to hear that me and Derek were dating.
We cleaned up some of the stuff after the party, and he helped me bring all my presents to my room in the agency. He set them down and walked up behind me, wrapping his gigantic arms around my torso. I leaned in to him, letting him support me. "Thanks for helping, Derek." I told him.
He leaned down to my cheek and brushed against it with his beard, making me squirm since I was very ticklish. I could hear him give a soft chuckle and was turning to face him when he planted a soft kiss on my cheek, making me blush furiously. There was no stopping the smiles on our faces as we walked out of the agency room together.
Derek's POV (years later)
I rolled over in bed to see my wife there. She looked so peaceful sleeping, and I knew she hadn't had much of it lately with the three kids we had. Jake and Josh, the 4 year old twins were a handful, but we loved them both. Shana, our 7 year old was very sweet and cuddly and was currently on the floor by my side of the bed, cuddled up in her numerous blankets.
"Good morning, Derek."
"Good morning, Logan." I responded, leaning over to kiss her. She pulled away, laughing and pointing to the foot of our bed where the twins were sleeping. I hadn't even noticed they were there. I grinned, taking a mental snapshot of this moment. I wouldn't give it up for the world.
