Cindi POV
I set my tray down and sat with my group of friends.
"Cindi, you won't believe what happened!" My friend, Veronica screamed turning to me. "What happened, V?" I asked taking a bite of my hamburger."Joshua and Phoebe broke up!" She yelled. Veronica was considered to be "rich" since she always knew the drama or gossip and wore expensive jewelry. "What? Really? That means I have a chance!" Joshua and Phoebe were the power couple of the 11th grade and every couple wanted to be like them.
"I still can't get over the fact you like Joshua! Girl, you can do better. Just because he's captain of the football team doesn't make him cool." She picked a fry off my tray and ate in anxiously. I quickly covered my food and fake coughed on it.
"Anyway, wanna go to the mall after school? My dad just gave me my back my credit card and I want to use it," She said, playing with her nails. "And maybe we can get our nails done, too."
"V, remember what happened last time. You maxed out your dad's credit card and had to work to pay back the money." I warned her, dipping my fries in ketchup.
"Man, Cindi who cares! You got to live off the edge sometimes!" She said. I shook my head and she gave me a disappointed look. "Your so uptight, man," She shook her head in disappointment. "Here comes football captain." She alerted me and I quickly shot my head up to see Joshua approaching us. "Act cool," I told her and she nodded.
"So, Cindi as you can see, I got this 25,000 necklace from-"
"Oh, hey Joshua! How you've been." I said, trying to act cool to impress him. "Hey, Cindi," He said. "And things have been fine-obviously not the break up of course.""Joshua, I'm so sorry Phoebe broke up with you," I started off, "You seem like a great person."
"Thank you and I was wondering if I could borrow your notes in math class since we have 6th period together,"He informed me. "And in case you didn't know, we have a game on Friday night and it will be nice if you and Veronica will come and show your support for us.""A game?"I said with fake shock. "Of course I'll come! What time?" I said leaning forward. "At 7:30 But you can come at 7. And I gotta go practice is after school." He walked away and I yelled, "Bye Joshua! Have a safe practice!" He turned around and gave me a thumbs up. I turned my attention back to Veronica. "You didn't let me finish my story about my 25,000 necklace!" She pouted, "V, I only pretended to be interested because he was coming.'' Veronica rolled her eyes and opened her lunch box and took out a bowl of soup.
"Broth soup? Again?" I said irritated. "Again, it's not yours. It's mine,"
"And it's disgusting," I said making nasty faces. "And it stinks."
"Oh, your right,'' She said checking her watch. "Lunch is almost over, anyway. I'll just stop by the vending machine and get a snack. See ya, bestie." I stood up and hugged her and she got her things together and left the cafeteria.
Just as Veronica left, the bell rang. Students scattered out of the room, and trampled into classes. This was everyday life in Philis Fenster High School [made up place]. You had to run like crazy to get into your classes on time or else you'll be locked out and marked unexcused. I sprinted and got shoved by a bunch of kids. It was like an avalanche! I shoved a few kids out of my way and arrived safely to math class.
"Good Afternoon Mr. Brooks," I told the math teacher. "Good Afternoon, Cindi," He replied. "Take your seat." I nodded my head and saw Joshua sitting in the back waving me over. Was Joshua the captain of the football team, waving me over? I took a deep breath and walked over him until I felt a foot trip me. I fell with a loud thud as I heard kids laughing.
"Oh, my bad. I didn't see you sitting there," I looked up and saw Phoebe, Joshua's ex girlfriend, leaned down in her chair, speaking to me. "Phoebe! Really? Cindi, you okay?" He asked, leaning his hand out. "Yes, I'm fine." I replied refusing his hand. "You sure?" He asked. I got up and sat in the front row, ignoring him.
"Alright, class settle down. Since of course I left my lesson plan book at home, we will watch a movie,'' He said and the whole class cheered. "We will watch 'Hidden Figures' since it's math-related." The whole class sighed and he rolled his eyes and played the movie.
Throughout the movie, I felt paper and notes being thrown at me. I knew it was Joshua trying to get my attention to apologize. On the last note, I was fed up and turned around to give him a death glare and he whispered to open the note. I sighed and opened the note and it read, 'Hey, I'm sorry for what Phoebe did. Can you please hand me your notebook so I can take notes?' and it had a smiley face.
I opened my bag and threw my notebook back at him and turned my attention back on the movie.
