chapter 16

You woke up in a panic. You went outside to find preston but he wasn't there. Neither was isabella. It was still dark. You heard sounds coming from the woods near the house. You looked that direction but walked the opposite way. "did they leave?" you quietly ask yourself.

The sound in the woods gets louder and closer. it eventually sounds like running. But not from a human. You turn around and you see a giant black shadow sprinting at you. You can't move and can only stare. Panic runs through you. You can't scream.

Right as the shadow consumes you, you get a small glimpse of the face and it seemed so familiar. You woke up for real this time and preston was laying next to you. "Hey, are you alright?" preston sits up quickly and cups your face to wipe your tears. "I-i- i don't know" you cry. " It was just a nightmare, okay?" preston says softly. You nod your head. He hugs you tightly and you hug him back. You didn't go back to sleep that night.

A few days have passed. You've been getting better. Preston finally lets you be alone. As long as he can see you. Isabella has been very sick lately. Antibiotics are low and there's no town close enough that anybody can make a run to. Everytime you try preston says "no" and says to wait til the next day. It has been three days and you still haven't been able to go.

"Preston she's getting worse. Let me go already" you say in irritation. " No, we don't have enough ammo or food to get us to the nearest town, which by the way, is two hours driving, and back, so imagine walking". " Well I'm not letting the last of my family die because you're being a pussy!"

you turn around and start walking towards the door. "Zoe! Come back here!" preston rushes after you. "isabella im going to get you medication" you say quickly and slam the door. You start sprinting as fast as you can so preston can't catch you.

After a few hours of walking you arrive at the nearest town. "Welcome to hellville. Hmm" you say out loud. Someone scratched out the real name and wrote hell. " a town I'm starting to feel like a citizen in " you walk past the sign and look for a store. " bingo" you accidentally half yell. You quickly cover your mouth. You slowly push the door to see if there's a bell. There wasn't one, luckily.

You began looking around for anything to use. It was an older store. As if it hasn't been updated since the 1950's. It was full of random trinkets, snacks, and medications. And so much candy... 'but that's not important right now' you had to mentally punch yourself. There was hardly anything worth grabbing.

Snacks were expired, and most of the medication was expired or spilled on the floor. Was this town even lived in before the world fell? As you looked through the medicine you heard shouting from outside.

" I swear i seen a human! A live person came in here!" you heard a stranger yell from the front door. "shit" you whisper and look for a place to hide. " You said that before and we almost got our asses munched off!" another man angrily yelled. You've heard that voice before...
