We arrive at the pond, thanks to Nicole sobing the directions and what might have happened to her if she's really gone. Lauren staying back at the house, promising to meet her girlfriend at the dorm later. Though, the thought still lingers in my mind of Chris being gone. Chris is one of the best things that have ever happened to me. She makes me realize that no matter how screwed up your past can get, it still makes you who you are. And I try not to forget who I was, but who I am today, because of it.
"Shane, you're crying." Nicole breaks me out of my thoughts of Chris. I take a minute, just putting my face in my hands and letting the tears fall.
"What if..what..i-if.."
"Shane. We have to get my sister. We don't have time for this right now." Nicole says sternly.
I take a deep breath, getting out of the car to wipe my tears out of the way. I call once more to Chris, not bothering to try to text her anymore. Still, no answer.
The wind picks up and I feel my cheeks sting from the cool wind. I look up at the full moon, casting a silvery shadow across the murky pond. There's a small wooden dock, checking off from the beach and ending to the pond. I squint at the dock, a girl with familiar curly hair staring down at something in the lake.
Chris.
I'm tempted to scream her name, but the voice in my head tells me that she is too smart for this. That she knows better, and won't do anything stupid. That she has me.
"There she is. Come on, stop staring and lets go!" I hear Nicole's impatient whisper, but I don't move. This is Chris's decision, and I know she will make the right one.
Nicole gives me a confused look, the silver moonlight highlighting her freckles-identical to her sister.
"Shane. I know this is hard, but I need Chris to be alive."
Click.
I go into fatherly- alpha mode, running down the grassy hill over looking the pond. Nicole right on my heels, pushing me to keep going. My mind always returning to, I need to get to Chris. That I need to save my daughter, my light, my Chris.
I look over to see Chris throwing a pebble at her reflection. She nods her head once, taking a minute to recall something. The run to my Chris seems like eternity. I push myself faster.
Chris slowly takes off her clothes and nods again at the pond. Then, what seems like slow mo, she jumps. I see her hands struggle to keep her under, I can feel her lungs trying to gasp for air.
I scream as loud as I can,"CHRIS!"
Lauren collapses on the ground sobbing, almost like the jump killed her. My legs go faster until I reach the end of the dock. I jump in fully clothed to get to the struggling Chris. except, the Chris in my arms seems to be limp and I feel my heart drop.
Is she dead? Please, dont let her be dead!
No. As I get her to shore lifeguard style, and check her pulse, her heart is still beating. Very, very, very slowly. She must have knocked herself out, or almost got to death.
I was almost too late. I should have been there, u should have asked if she was hurting. I should have been the dad she needed-
I shake my head to clear my thoughts. I need to call an ambulance.immediately.911 is dialed as quick as my shaking fingers could go.
"911 what is your emergency?" The calm woman answers.
"My..my daughter..she needs an ambulance..." I choke out."Please..hurry. She..almost..drowned herself."
