"Come on, come on" Brad muttered to himself, sweating.

The zombies were getting closer by the second, running like the weird monsters they were.

"This is going to take a while people, I'm gonna need you to buy me some time", without another word, Dave jumped out of the open trunk with a rifle in hand,which he found in there. He landed expertly on the ground and began killing the brain hungry zombies.

Ruby, Helena and Lucy followed, while Tyler got to the open bonnet to help Brad out. The zombies sprang out of their unnoticed areas and began surrounding the truck, showing their disgusting mouths and blood mixed saliva.

Lucy ran to cover an already frantic Tyler.

"Work you old piece of junk" he said hitting the battery in frustration. She immediately began shooting at the zombies that were already too close. She looked back to see if there was any progress only to see a nervous Brad wiping off beads of sweat.

Suddenly, she felt cold sticky hands on hers and she jerked back to see a zombie about to bite her. She knocked it off, losing her gun in the process. With terror in her eyes, she searched her back pocket for her knife but could not find it.

"Oh no" the zombie regained itself fast and ran towards her with horrible speed. It tackled her to the ground as she tried to push it off. She looked around for anyone that could help her but the were all occupied.

With one hand, she felt around for something, anything that could kill it. Just as her arms started becoming weak and her hope lost, the engine roared to life.

"Yes!" Tyler shouted in triumph and turned around to shoot the zombie on Lucy. She pushed the limp corpse off her, gasping for air. He held out a hand to her and she took it, frowning.

"Took you long enough" he smirked at her, making her shove him. "It's not over yet"

"Go!, Go!, Go!" Dave barked at Lucy and Helena while shooting behind them. Lucy ran into the passenger seat while the others climbed into the trunk only to see Emily curled up into a ball looking frightened.

Before anyone could complain, Brad sped off.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I think we've lost them" Emily said from the corner she was curled up in and got a hard glare from Helena.
"I think it's high time we stopped this welcoming act and tell you the fact" Helena stared deeply into her eyes with a hundred percent seriousness. " it's either you kill or you get killed. We would not always watch your back, so stop being a baby and learn to fight. Your training starts first thing tomorrow"
"But I'm ..."
"But nothing" she barked with fury in her eyes " it's either you fight or you get lost" her words made Lucy think back to when she just met them and how they all acted. She almost felt sorry for her.
Emily stared at her with tears in her eyes, then she turned and blinked it back. They all watched the seen but none seemed willing to talk, until Brad broke the silence.
"Urgh" he stretched his hands and cracked his knuckles. "talk about tension, I am beat. Tyler, be a good man and take over please" without an answer, he stopped the truck and got down to the trunk. Tyler reluctantly walked over to the driver seat and started the engine.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
A bump on the road woke Lucy up. She sat up to see Tyler with tired eyes, driving down the empty dark road with only the headlights as a source of light. She turned back to see the rest all asleep. Dave's hand wrapped around Helena, Brad snoring loudly, Ruby drooling and Emily with puffy eyes.

She frowned at the sight and turned back to a half awake Tyler. She smiled at him dozing off and thought of how she met all of them. Were they really sure about this safe place. Were they going the right way. Were they lost.

The loud sound of the horn blowing brought her out of her thoughts only to see Tyler's head pressed on the steering wheel. She quickly tapped him, making him jump and control the already swerving truck.

He groaned and slapped his face.

"I would have helped if I knew how to drive" she said smiling but it was not returned. She mentally slapped herself for that and looked down at her feet.

"Then you better learn" she looked back up and grinned at his tired smile. She looked out the window for something to talk about.

"The stars are really pretty. It's a pity how chaotic down here is though"

"Yeah" she looked back at him as a question once asked popped back.

"So, are you going to tell me what really happened before the apocalypse dawned on you?" he did not answer but focused on the road, she crossed her fingers and tried again, "you know, since we're friends and all, you can tell me, besides the others are asleep" he sighed and continued driving. "Tyler?"

"I ... had a sister... " she sighed in relief and and listened to the words coming out of his mouth intently, not wanting to miss a thing, " she was two years younger and so sweet. She was my best friend and the only one I could trust. Her name was Tamara. She was really short but very strong and a pain in the ass"

He smiled as he talked about his sister and she did not want to interrupt him with any question.

"She was not girly at all. She always cut her hair short and never wore a gown. She played a lot and was very social. She was the only one I considered family. My mum was dead and my dad..."

He frowned and tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

"... he was good for nothing, to us anyway. Some nights my sister and I would play pranks on him even at our age. He never cared for us and always used us for his little experiments, locking himself all day in his lab."

He relaxed again.

"My sis and I had this bond that could never be broken. We hardly ever fought and when we did, it never lasted till the next day. Some nights we'd sleep on the same bed. We did almost everything together. We shared a best colour, black and ate together, watched tv together, fought together and loved each other. "

Without him realising, he had this huge grin on his face.

"We never kept secrets from each other. I'll be the first to know her crush. Always interrogated her boyfriends and she did the same"

His smile slowly went down and the light in his eyes dimmed.

"Then one day she got sick, cancer, the same that killed my mum. I didn't have the money to help and my dad was never around. She died in my arms, Lucy. I'll never forget those that tried to help and her last words"

He took a deep breath in and exhaled slowly

"She said I should never forget"

The engine made a loud noise and the vehicle slowed to a stop.

"Just great. What are we gonna do now?"

Lucy looked round, the place seemed peaceful. She was at loss for the right words that would not make him angry or more sad so she just patted his back.

"You need to sleep, I'll be on the look out"

He nodded and rested his head back, closing his eyes. Some moments later when he was fast asleep, his head shifted and rested on her shoulder. Startled, she looked at him and saw a tear stain on his left cheek.

The rest of the story would be for another day, she thought, sighing.
