Chapter 4

Bonnie was holding up her head with her hands as she blankly stared at the heartbreaking scene that was unfolding before her eyes. The usually happy, bubbly and smiling Caroline was now crying and praying for everything to simply be a dream or perhaps a very bad nightmare.

But it was all too real.

Bonnie saw it with her own eyes. The body, the mutilations, the blood, they were tangible. She wasn't just stuck in a bad CSI supernatural spin-off, she was in it for real. The stakes, they were very high and substantial too.

"My mom is dead," Caroline tried to take in as her whole body shivered from the tears she was spilling.

They were all, yet again, in the files room. They had waited a few days after the Sheriff's body was transported to the morgue before telling her daughter the news. It probably would've been too much for her, seeing her mother that way, dead.

Klaus was holding her hand firmly, trying to console her, but consoling a broken soul would take a lot of time and patience.

Two things that they couldn't afford because of the ongoing investigation.

There were too many murders and victims in so little time. And no one knew when this serial killer would strike again and turn another one of the Mystic Falls residents into a new document to consult.

Klaus led Caroline out of the files room, away from the murdering drama. It was for her own good to be left out of this, it was getting way too personal. It was in all likelihood for the better.

"Where were we again?" Damon asked, as soon as the door shut behind the two blonde-haired individuals that just departed.

"My theory, right?" Bonnie spoke as she thoroughly scanned the room around her.

Their group had considerably shrunk. It consisted of Kol, herself, Stefan, Elena, Damon and Henry. The rest of the Mikaelson family -except for Niklaus- and Tyler had completely bailed. Rebekah had decided to temporarily leave town before departing for good and Elijah made up his mind and settled on a few weeks-long leisure time in Florida as a change from the tensed and strained mindset that Mystic Falls was forcing him into. As for Tyler, well, you could say he chickened out.

Damon's eyebrows raised as he remembered and he began explaining to the others :

"According to Bonnie's suddenly recovered flashbacks, Enzo apparently knew the person who killed him, meaning that the killer was someone close to him. And because he has spent seventy years locked away inside a basement and held captive by the Augustine Society, we can easily decipher that he didn't know a lot of people. His alive friend-count pretty much rounded up to fourteen maximum, us included."

"So, what if the killer was part of the Augustine Society cult slash whatever that was?" Henry chimed in, not quite sure as to what the organization stood for yet.

The eldest Salvatore brother thought for an instant before surprisingly nodding his head, agreeing.

"Great hypothesis," he flashed him a smile so wide that it was obviously fake, "Stefan and Elena, you go watch the perimeter to report any suspect activity. Kol, since Klaus left with Caroline, you'll come with me. We have work to do finding answers about these Augustine peeps on the Whitmore College campus."

If Henry wasn't already standing up, Bonnie was sure that he would've dramatically gotten up of his seat and slapped his hand against the wooden table. His face was contorted in anger and his once delicate and attractive features were deformed in furor.

"And what am I supposed to do? I'm the one who gave you a lead to this Augustine place! Don't go there without me!" he exclaimed very loudly.

Geez... No need to get that mad. Elena and Stefan saw this as their cue to leave.
