November 2014
She stormed out of her and her boyfriend's flat, slamming the door behind her as tears rolled down her cheeks. This was the worst fight they'd gotten into in their already turbulent relationship, and she needed space. He just couldn't understand that she didn't want to be like him, or to live like him.
She had to get away, to go somewhere far away from him. There was no choice. She couldn't be around him anymore, it was making her sick to just sit around and pretend like everything was fine when it just wasn't. Her choices meant something to her. She thought relationships were supposed to be equal, that they were supposed to be soulmates, but evidently that wasn't the case. He lied.
A soulmate would let her choose her own path. A soulmate would respect her wishes. A soulmate wouldn't try to force her into something under the guise of protecting her.
She guessed they weren't meant to be after all.
Just like she'd thought from the beginning.
She ran down the stairs of the crickety old building and let herself on to the freezing street below. It was snowing, and she didn't have a coat. All she had was the pajamas she'd been wearing when the fight started, flannel pants and one of his shirts doing nothing to protect her against the frigid air.
The darkness seemed to blind her, even with the faint glow of the streetlights.
She'd come back soon, but she couldn't be around him right now. She'd find some place warm, a twenty four hour cafe or something. London had a decent amount of those, it was just a matter of finding one.
If this was any other fight she would have gone to his sister's flat, staying with her and her boyfriend for the time being. She'd done it for a long time, and the two were always willing to take her in. There was no doubt in her mind that they would. It just wasn't an option now.
They'd agree with him this time though. They had the same opinions about things. She wasn't safe, couldn't be safe, had to be protected.
She'd start to rip her hair out if one more person insisted on protecting her. His sister would go about it in a different way, respecting a little bit more of her bodily autonomy, but it would still be the same.
She could just scream, she was so frustrated. She tried to calm herself, to will herself to keep going.
They treated her as if she was weak and breakable, like she didn't have her own strengths and she hadn't made it this far on her own. She had to remind herself of that.
She'd done it on her own.
No help from him.
She stalked off, wrapping her arms around her body in an attempt to warm herself as she continued to cry.
The brunette let down her frizzy brown hair, hoping that it would protect her a bit against the chill of the December wind.
She got four blocks before she started to feel paranoid, and six blocks before she was almost certain someone was following her. Yet every time she looked behind her there was no one there. Still, the hairs on the back of her neck stood on end and she quickened her pace.
She was pulled into an alley way at lightning speed, the world seeming to blur around her, and a hand was clamped over her mouth.
"You're a pretty little thing." A voice said right beside her ear, and she turned around to see crimson eyes looking at her hungrily. "It's a shame you have to die."
Emeline woke up panting, adrenaline coursing through her body as she looked at the clock.
4:06
The dream had felt so real, like it was actually happening to her. The girl in her dream had looked nothing like her, the only similarity being their brown hair, but she somehow knew it was supposed to be her in the dream.
Emeline's day went by in a daze, her friends all noticing the brunette's distracted state. She couldn't help but focus on the dream, anytime she blinked or closed her eyes she could see a pair of hungry crimson ones looking right back at her. She even found herself drawing them in her English class, the crude drawing staring up at her before she frantically erased them.
Before she knew it the end of the day had come, and she found herself in her history class yet again.
"Are you okay?" Jasper asked when she sat down, taking in the bags under her eyes.
"Yeah, it's no biggie. I had a nightmare last night and I'm pretty shook up about it." Emeline said automatically, resting her head on the cool desk. To top everything off her head was pounding. All day she'd felt like death, and the second she sat down next to Jasper it got worse. The only thing she could do was keep some semblance of chill about her so that no one would insist she got sent home.
Jasper frowned as Emeline rested her head on the desk, and Emeline groaned. A flash of the red eyes forced their way into her vision yet again, standing out against dark skin and she sat up as the bell rang, starting class.
It wasn't like nightmares were anything new, but this one couldn't stop playing in Emeline's head.
"It's a shame you have to die."
"You sure you're okay?" Jasper asked, and he found himself concerned about the girl sitting beside him. She was terrified.
Emeline could feel her slowly building migraine start to lift away, and she nodded her head. "Yeah." She said simply, turning to their teacher. In the span of her history class she started to feel a million times better, and once it ended she was in an amazing mood for no reason.
It was like a switch had gone off in her head, pushing the disturbing dream out and soaking in happy feelings, and Emeline was grateful.
She head to the student parking lot at the end of class, following Jasper out of the room. "Mind if I come with you? I wanted to talk to your sister." She hadn't actually planned to talk to her today, originally wanting to go home and bury herself under a mountain of blankets, but suddenly right now seemed like the perfect time.
Emeline felt a little high from giddiness if she was being honest.
She'd had the genius idea of inviting Alice to her and her friend's movie plans, wanting to know the girl a bit more. Alice seemed friendly and Emeline thought that she'd fit well into the friend group. She did say that she wanted to be friends with Emeline, or something like that.
Jasper shrugged and Emeline continued to follow him, practically running up to Alice when she saw her. "Hey!" She said, a grin on her face, and Emeline wondered yet again how her mood had done such a 360. "My friends and I are going to see Jessabelle on Friday and I was wondering if you'd want to come with. I know it's pretty far off but-"
The shorter girl stopped Emeline in her tracks with an enthusiastic "I'd love to!" and Emeline quickly messaged the group chat that they'd made for the plans and added Alice in.
"Cool! That's all I really wanted to ask you, so I guess I'll see you then?" Emeline said, as she could see her mom's car pulling up to the school, and she waved goodbye to Alice and Jasper, who had a small smile on his face.
"See you then!"
