December 2014
After Mike had dropped them off at Jessica's house, Jessica almost immediately broke out the cheesy movies, and they spent several hours simply watching romcoms and catching up. Emeline hadn't been fully there in a conversation since before Thanksgiving break.
"It just feels like you've been off recently." Jessica said as the two girls sat on her couch with pizza and wine, the sun long having set.
Emeline shrugged as she picked her pepperonis off and handed them to Jessica. "I think I might have a bug or something." The taller girl lied, and Jessica raised an eyebrow at her.
"No offense Em, but that's bullshit." She said as she graciously stacked Emeline's pepperonis up on her paper plate, and Emeline took a sip from her wine glass. This was a tradition, at least for the past year. Jessica's parents didn't really mind if she drank at home, so Jessica and Emeline would sit on her couch and get wine drunk. Occasionally Angela would join them, but more often than not it ended up just being Jessica and Emeline. They liked it that way.
Emeline was two glasses in, and though she wasn't drunk by any means, she was more willing to say what was on her mind. She laughed as Jessica tried to shove an entire slice of pizza down her throat, and she tried to find a way to word things. "You'll think I'm insane if I say anything."
Jessica swallowed the pizza that she'd been chewing, and she scoffed at the taller girl who she was laying on top of, her legs stretched out. "Emeline, how long have we been friends?"
"Since we were six." Emeline supplies, having a feeling she knew where the younger girl was going with this.
Jessica smiled as if that proved her point. "So, don't you think in the past decade I've realized how insane you are?"
Emeline laughed, and she could feel her barriers breaking. She hated keeping things from Jessica. Although her best friend was the biggest gossip she'd ever met, she knew Jess would never share her secrets. Partially because Emeline had mountains of dirt on Jessica, and partially because she knew the girl had a loyalty to her. She'd been the first person to make friends with Jessica when Jessica moved to Forks in Kindergarten, and that was a bond no one could break. "Okay, but you can't make fun of me."
"I can't make any promises." Jessica said seriously, popping a pepperoni into her mouth, and Emeline merely shook her head at her best friend's antics.
"Okay. So-" Emeline really didn't know how to word things. It sounded insane to her, and she was the one who had the thoughts. "Do you believe in reincarnation?" Emeline decided not to touch on the whole Jasper subject as of yet, as she didn't know what he was.
"I guess? I never really thought about it." Jessica was intrigued now, past just worrying about her friend, and Emeline let it all tumble out, helped along by the alcohol in her system.
