December 2014
Thanksgiving break consisted of religiously reading every post Hannah Snow has ever made on her blog, which was just barely helpful.
The girl was kind of boring. She wanted to study dinosaurs which Emeline guessed was pretty cool, and she lived in Montana. Emeline felt kind of bad for the girl on that front. She thought she lived in the middle of nowhere.
Most of all, it was unhelpful because the girl just disappeared after the post she made saying she was going to therapy.
That was it.
She'd posted a few more things about dreams and the notes she'd been leaving for herself, and they were all similarly weird. "He's coming" and "Remember the Three Rivers- Do Not Throw This Note Away" were two others that Hannah mentioned finding, or writing.
Emeline couldn't find anything else promising either, so she was tempted to let it rest. She knew she was being insane, but for some reason she just couldn't let the topic go.
Going back to school was a blessing to her, really. She was driving herself crazy, too caught up in her own head to even really respond to messages from her friends.
Emeline had just finished tying her hair up into a ponytail when Mike came to pick her up, and she grabbed her backpack and ran out the door, practically hopping into Mike's minivan, eager to get away from her house and her laptop and her own brain.
"What's got you all hyper?" Mike asked, looking at Emeline with a bewildered face, and Emeline shrugged in response.
Mike practically dragged Emeline to the rest of their friends when they got to the school, insisting that she spend time with them instead of with Hale, but she hadn't planned to meet up with Jasper anyways. He was another thing that she'd spent a little too much time thinking about over break.
"I'm gonna ask him out again Ang. I mean the worst he can do is say no and I've already been through that so like, maybe if I try again he'll realize how much of a catch I am." Jessica flopped her hair and Emeline finally let go of all the tension she'd been holding. Two seconds of Jessica's ridiculousness was all it took to temporarily put Emeline at ease.
"You show him, Jess." Emeline said, adding a fist pump for emphasis, and she almost had a heart attack when she looked at Jess again. Same small stature, but blonde curls had replaced Jess's brown hair, and her blue eyes changed shape and hue while the rest of her was taken over by facial features that Emeline didn't know were familiar until that moment, and she stood slack jawed.
"Charlotte?" Emeline whispered, horrified, and Jessica was back and looking at Emeline like she'd grown a second and third head simultaneously.
This was a new level of crazy.
