Chapter 8: ❝Trouble just always seems to find me, I guess❞
♡Evelyn's POV♡
The feeling of apprehension had completely taken over my body.
I feared for my life as I cautiously walked down the crowded hallway, breaking eye contact with everybody that stopped and stared. It was clear to me that news of the recent fiasco had inevitably broken out but all I could do was live my life normally, the only difference being the unbearable anxiety travelling through my veins at the thought of what Blake might do when he found me.
Walking through the double doors of the cafeteria, it was almost no surprise to me when a large majority of people had stopped their conversations just to stare at my face as if I were some kind of freak show. I heard the unconcealed whispers and saw all the ambiguous emotions portrayed in an array of coloured orbs but as usual, I turned a blind eye and proceeded to walk in the direction of the line of students waiting to get their food.
"Evelyn."
But like a brick wall preventing me from reaching my destination, Alanna towered over me with her arms folded over her chest, wearing her gold and blue cheerleading uniform that made all the guys go crazy and accede to her every demand without having to think twice. Judging by the way her eerie blue eyes shone vexatiously, it left no doubt in my mind that she too had heard about the catastrophe I so badly wanted erased from my memory so I wouldn't have to be glancing every which way in fear of her enraged boyfriend.
"Yes?"
Snarling, she glared at me as if I was the gum on the bottom of her designer shoe. "Who gave you permission to punch my boyfriend in the nose?"
I scoffed inaudibly, finding the whole confrontation ridiculous, however, deep down I envied Blake for having someone looking out for him even if it was over a matter as trivial as this.
"Your boyfriend gave me permission," I answered truthfully, looking her straight in the eye. "He said if I didn't hit him, I would get hit and if I did hit him, I would still get hit so-"
I watched as her face contorted into one of acute anger and grief but it's not like I had a lot of time to study it because next thing I knew, I was being slapped in the face, the tip of her sharp nail grazing my cheek.
My face remained turned to the left as I tried to get over the shock of her precipitous slap.
For once, I wanted to be the resilience in the face of adversity. I was tired of feeling weak and helpless. I was going to deal with this on my own regardless of whether I envied Blake or not. None of them deserved my tears, jealousy or feeling of hardship.
"So, your worthless ass decided to go with the second option?!" She exclaimed. "If you ever lay a finger on him again, I'll-"
"You'll what?!" I yelled back with the same amount of intensity. My eyes were glassy and bulging out of their sockets as I stared at her with a new found confidence. "You'll make my life a living hell? Well, that's a shame because you seem to have already taken it upon yourself to do that daily."
Scoffing, the corners of her lips turned upwards in disbelief. "You dare talk back?" She questioned through gritted teeth. "Who do you think you are?"
"I'm a worthless piece of trash trying to obtain some lunch without getting mentally and physically harassed!" My breath hitched as I tried to hold back the tears threatening to fall. "Can I not even do that?!"
She smirked. "No problem - I'll get you some lunch."
I watched with my blurry vision as she walked towards a nearby table to steal a tray of food from a blonde-haired girl but she didn't complain. Of course, she didn't.
