Chapter 24: ❝I told you I loved you once❞
♡Evelyn's POV♡
"Let go of me!"
"No, don't be a wuss!"
"I can't help if that's the way I was born!"
Sighing aggressively, Luke tugged me in the direction of the intimidating party for the umpteenth time and wouldn't ease up regardless of the fear that had sketched itself on my face.
"Live a little for Christ's sake," he mumbled, his eyebrows clashed together in upset as he gazed down at me with pleading eyes - a pretty odd combination but he seemed to have pulled it off very well because next thing I knew I was slowly relaxing my muscles under his grip.
He smiled in satisfaction before repeating the words of reassurance he had uttered to me when he had come to pick me up at my place. "I'll be with you the whole night so you don't need to worry, alright?"
I nodded unsurely.
Would it be totally cliche if I told him I had a bad feeling about this?
Treading the path that led to the party, I could tell Rachel was from a well-off family, judging wholly on the fact that her house could most likely fit three homes from my estate with no hassle at all -- just a thought.

Alcohol.
Dancing.
Sex.
Those were the words Luke had used to describe a high school party and walking into the large house, I saw that he was indeed correct. Thankfully, some drunk couples had enough decency to decide not to go at it like rabbits in the middle of the dance floor based on the fact, I had witnessed a few run upstairs like giddy children hand in hand.
Hand in hand.
Memories replayed in my head of the times Mark and I had shared the same skin contact expect our interaction was a lot more innocent than what I perceived to happening upstairs.
"The only reason they feel that way is because, like soldiers, they mindlessly follow their leader as they believe the absence of a ruler will lead to their downfall. Maybe you should try being a little nicer to Evelyn so everyone will follow your heartfelt example."
"Don't look in her direction - don't even breathe around her because if you do, I swear you'll be sorry," were his parting words before he dragged me out of the cafeteria, bringing me back to the first time I had felt the coldness of his hand in mine.
It was funny to think that all of that had happened in the span of four months when it honestly just felt like yesterday. The memories of our pure, blameless relationship all ruined because of that one night. Now, every time I thought about him, the good times just got overrode with his careless, unconscious mistake. The sad thing was I knew I'd forgive him eventually because similar to what I had told Luke, no matter what happened I would always stay by his side. That was love and albeit those three words had never been exchanged between Mark and I, I still felt connected to him deeply since all those nights I had stayed up picturing his face could not simply evanesce from memory.
A light tap on my shoulder brought me out of my trance. "Are you okay?", came Luke's concerned voice.
I turned to him with a forced smile and said, "yeah, of course, I am."
