Chapter 30: ❝...Okay❞
♡Evelyn's POV♡
After the basketball game, Mark had informed me that there was going to be an afterparty so I was very unhesitant to tell him that I didn't plan on going because I still had some books in my locker that I needed to take home for the holidays. My dad was waiting for me to gather them after I had called him to pick me up as I did not feel comfortable with walking home in the dark.
He honked, signalling me to hurry up and I replied by mockingly increasing my walking pace down the hall to my locker. Once I got there, the sound of a crash carried itself across the empty hallway, making me gasp and jump slightly in surprise. The sound of annoyed grunts, followed by more terrifying sounds coming from a classroom I'm guessing, made my heart bang in my chest due to the anxiety I felt as my thoughts brought me to different, unsettling scenarios.
My instinct was telling me to stay and see what the problem was but my brain wanted me out of the school as soon as possible, which was understandable since it was scientifically proven that one function of the human brain was to protect.
But what would I need to be protected from?
Naturally, I went with my instinct.
"You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in the court of law."
My eyes widened as I heard the Miranda Warning being recited by an oddly familiar voice that gradually got closer and closer until everything became clear in my range of sight.
Nathan was struggling against two police officers who had him held by the arms that were restricted by the silver, metallic handcuffs that had been pulled towards the back. The third officer was strolling along beside them while mumbling something into an unidentifiable device that looked identical to that of a walkie-talkie. I soon recognized them. They were the police officers who had barged into the Gucci store a while back in search of a criminal named Elijah Burnes.
Nathan lifted his concealed gaze from the ground and his mouth parted slightly when he noticed me standing there in a frozen state of shock and bewilderment.
"Evelyn..."
Eventually, I shook my head from side to side in order to regain my senses as I turned my attention to the three police officers who had slowed down their walking pace as if knowing I was going to intrude and question their actions.
"W-What's going on, officer?" I inquired, not exactly sure which one I was referring to but I still held onto the inessential hope that I would get a response.
One of them suddenly snapped their fingers as their mouth formed the shape of an 'o'. "Ah, you're the lady who had allegedly knocked Burnes out unconscious five months ago in the mall, correct?"
I nodded reluctantly, my facial expression still perplexed. "Y-Yes but..."
I trailed off when I noticed the cap on Nathan's pin straight, auburn hair.
Or... Elijah rather.
"Why?" my eyes whispered and he could only give me a remorseful, woebegone grin as he verbally yet enigmatically whispered back, "I did it for her."
And just like that, the police pushed him forward and I didn't have the fortitude to watch them leave into the night where the silver, crescent moon still shone vividly.
