Chapter 18: ❝Why did you lie to me?❞
♡Evelyn's POV♡
"Oh, my gosh, stop!"
I didn't know what to do as I watched the horrifying sight in front of me. Not that I could do anything because Nathan had a firm hold on me, preventing me from at least trying to break up the fight.
My eyes darted around at the crowd of people unabashedly watching the brawl and I was beyond surprised when I saw that Luke was amongst them.
"Luke!" I screeched, causing him to nonchalantly look in my direction with an eyebrow faintly raised.
"Yeah?"
"Do something!"
I still tried to break free of Nathan's grip but he was stronger than he looked as he held me tightly by the arms, keeping my back pressed against him to stop me from interfering with the unexpected fight that unravelled in the school's corridor.
Luke turned back to the sight and watched with restrained eyes as Mark got kneed in the stomach. "We should leave them," he spoke softly, leading me to believe that he had gone mad. "They've had bottled up anger towards each other for years. It's time to let that out."
"And what if they kill each other?" I questioned, slowly succumbing to the fact that there was no matching Nathan's inhumane strength capacity.
Luke shook his head while in turn swooping his hair to the side out of his squinted eyes that observed Mark standing up straight before charging towards Blake, resulting in even more pained groans and yells of effort.
"I won't let it get that far," he said simply and for some reason that one sentence gave me the reassurance I needed.
The endless chants of "fight" angered me to some extent because instead of cheering them on, the crowd should've been putting a stop to it but sure, why not give people another reason to conclude why our generation was so messed up.
Cameron, Dillon and Adam were also in the midst of the large crowd, each of them standing at different areas of the lopsided square, almost as if guarding their sector.
Were they thinking the same thing?
"Your boyfriend is probably going to kill me for this."
I turned my head slightly behind me to look at Nathan who glanced at Mark before training his eyes on me.
I shrugged. "Then maybe you should let me go so we can put a stop to this."
He shook his head, pursing his lips to give me a look that said, 'nice try' before explaining that he was given strict orders not to let me go.
I rolled my eyes, the sound of each punch - each kick almost becoming unbearable at this point. "Why are they even fighting?"
Nathan sighed sharply before answering. "Well, after Mark heard about what went down between you and Blake, he just stormed over here and started throwing punches at his face."
I stilled, taking a second to let those words register in my head.
Nathan must've taken notice of my lack of movement because he asked, "are you okay?"
I didn't respond and just stared down at my old, worn out converse with involuntarily parted lips, feeling irrepressible guilt bubble up within my chest.
It was when Nathan had thoughtlessly loosened his grip on my arms that I shoved him away with all my might, causing him to stumble backwards as I ran towards Mark. Before he could throw a blow at Blake's stomach, I wrapped my arms around him in an attempt to get him to stop. He got distracted and glanced down at my hands before trailing his gaze up along the length my arms and lastly, my pleading eyes.
