Chapter 20: ❝Your nose is bleeding❞
♡Evelyn's POV♡
The past few days had been immensely stressful for me. Mark had been avoiding me and I didn't understand why. Ever since Luke and I had returned to the nurse's office where he laid, he hardly said anything to either of us. I had even preferred for him to argue with Luke like he had been doing recently than to not say anything at all. His sudden silence made me inexorably question if I had done something wrong but after laying in my bed for many hours, trying to analyze any weird behaviour I might've displayed, I came to the conclusion that maybe it wasn't me. Maybe he was dealing with something himself.
Unfortunately, today was Thursday so that meant P.E, aka pointless education.
I had my sports bag clutched in my hand, which carried out its purpose of holding my P.E attire that always consisted of thick, black leggings and an oversized hoodie. Glancing at the two green doors that led to the boy's locker room and the girl's locker room, I felt my blood turn cold at the former entrance. There was no way I was even going to consider setting foot into the locker room filled with witches. Last time I had decided to do so, everyone stopped their conversation to stare at me. I didn't think much of it since it was a 'superpower' I was blessed with, howbeit after I had changed, I quickly scurried out of there with soaked clothes due to the fact that someone had poured water over my changing room stall.
Turning my back to the locker room that seeped giggles and gossip, I opened the door to the girl's bathroom opposite it to get changed. It was the only option I had unless I wanted the incident that had happened two years ago to repeat itself.
Walking into a stall, I dragged my sports bag against the tiled floor, unstirred by the germs it must've collected and slammed the door behind me before sitting down on the toilet seat lid. Running a hand down my face, I groaned at the thought of having to see Mark again since we haplessly shared the same P.E class.
The normal person would've been thrilled at getting another chance to talk while gripping onto the pathetic hope that they wouldn't get blown off this time but not me. I had too much pride and wasn't about to lay it all out on the line. It was up to him whether he wanted to sort out whatever issue had risen up between us but the only flaw to my tough, independent front was that I would wait for him as long as it took.
After changing, I walked into the sports hall with my hands shoved into the pockets of my plain, blue hoodie. At the start of high school, the P.E teachers' seemed very strict about the P.E uniform we as students were supposed to wear but as the years went by, the students really didn't care anymore and soon, neither did the teachers'.
I took a seat on a bench far away from everyone else so I wouldn't have to suffer the looks of disgust or the moving away of people who seemed to have thought I had inherited some kind of disease.
"Hey."
Looking up in the direction of the voice, a smile immediately made its way to my face. "Hi, Nathan."
He grinned and sat down beside me and that thankfully made me feel less of an outcast.
During the absence of Mark, Nathan had been gradually filling the figurative stillness by talking to me and trying his best to make me laugh and smile. I appreciated his company and also found that we shared a lot of the same interests.
I decided to make conversation by saying in a glum voice, "I'm not looking forward to this."
He chuckled, aware that I was talking about P.E. "I don't know, I actually don't mind this class."
