The next morning as soon as I wake up I head downstairs to check on Damien. Just as I suspected he's already gone, leaving a note for my mom.
Thank you for your kindness. I had to leave early but I'm doing better.
As I read the note I can't help letting out a sigh. A loud noise upstairs catches my attention so I hurry up. The tumbling noise seemed to come from Sean's room.
I'm about to open the door but decide to knock before going in.
"Sean, you okay?"
"Um yeah I'm fine." He says but he sounds agitated.
I open the door and he covers one of his eyes. "Um hi." He says sitting up straight.
He's acting really weird. I think to myself.
"What was that?" I hear my mom call from downstairs.
"Um nothing m-" he says and then stops. "It was nothing. I just fell off the bed again."
"Alright, but you have to be careful." She shouts.
"Yeah sorry about that." He shouts and then looks at me. "Um could I have some space please?"
"Did you hurt your eye?"
"Um no, it's nothing, just leave it be Mel." He says as I reach out to move his hand away from his face. "No stop, Melody please." He grabs my hand with his free one and tries pushing me away. As we struggle we end up falling to the floor and we grunt as he hits the back of his head and I land on top of him.
"Sorry." I say picking myself up.
"It's alright." He says opening his eyes and making me gasp.
"Oh my-"
"Agh." He says covering it again and looking away.
"Why are your eyes two different colors?" I ask and he shrugs.
"I could ask the same thing to you." He says.
"What?" I respond quickly getting up to check in the mirror.
I let out a small gasp when we stand side by side and notice that our eyes are the same. One green and one brown.
"What's with all the commotion?" My mom asks as she walks into the room and we slowly turn to face her.
She looks at us and purses her lips. "Alright, you guys are staying home today. I have to get going but I'll see you guys later." She says looking at us with a small smile. Before she walks out the door her eyes linger on Sean and he looks down.
As soon as she leaves I give Sean a suspicious look. "Do you know something about this?" I ask and he shakes his head.
"I'm just as lost as you are." He says looking at he mirror once more with a sigh. Then he lays down on his bed. "I'm going to take a nap, maybe that will help."
"I hope so." I say hugging one of his pillows and laying down. Half an hour passes and I slightly open one eye only to see Sean still asleep.
He sure sleeps a lot. I think to myself with a smile, then I find myself reaching out to touch his forehead as he frowns in his sleep.
His muscles relax and he reaches out grabbing my hand and pulling it closer to him.
I stare at our hands for a while before a faint argument downstairs catches my attention.
Slowly getting up, I leave Sean's room and get closer to hear what it's about.
"You are going to have to tell her soon." My mom says.
"I know, I just thought we could wait until her birthday." My dad replies running his hands through his hair.
What are they hiding from me?
With a sigh, I go back to the bathroom to look in the mirror and see that my eyes are still the same. When I open the door of Sean's room I see that he is still sleeping, drool running from his mouth.
I need some time to think. I grab a hoodie and some sunglasses and head downstairs to head out to the beach stopping when I reach the bay.
Without thinking I swing my legs over and let them touch the cold water bringing some comfort.
I quickly turn around when I hear footsteps behind me and I'm surprised to see Damien standing there.
"Um, hi." He says placing something on the ground. "I wanted to give something to your mom but I saw you here on my way."
I nod and use my hair to hide my face. I thought he was going to leave but he sits next to me.
"Everything okay? You didn't go to school today." He says playing with the water a bit.
"I wasn't feeling too well." I reply. "I should probably head home already." I say standing up. As I'm about to reach for a nearby pole to help me, I feel a sharp pain in my head making me wince, and the pole gets farther and farther away.
As I collide with something, there's a ringing in my ears and coldness surrounds me.
Then when I open my eyes I see something glowing which I realize it's a beautiful lady as she comes into focus.
She smiles at me and gently touches my temple before she disappears and I feel something hard against me.
"Melody? Are you okay?" Damien asks helping me up to the bay and patting my back until I cough up all the water.
"I'm fine." I reply wiping my mouth.
"I'll walk you home." He says and I nod as he helps me stand up.
I feel like I'm still in a trance as we walk, and I barely register the fact that Damien is walking like normal.
We stop and I give Damien a small smile before going in and taking a seat at the table.
During dinner I'm mostly quiet barely eating my food. Out of the corner of my eye I can see my parents exchanging glances.
"Everything alright sweetheart?" My dad asks.
"Yeah, I just have a slight headache. I think I'm going to bed." I say grabbing my plate and passing it to Sean who happily takes it.
As I walk on the stairs, I start feeling lightheaded and fall backwards only to collide with something.
The last thing I hear is my name been called out.
Everything will make sense soon. Echoes as I fall into darkness.
