"And, of course, the Prince was happy to oblige. Considering his sister was endearingly favourable of me."

Mary smiled politely, "Oh? Is that so?"

The jolly old man laughed, "Yes, quite so, m'lady! Should you have seen his face, you would know of how persuasive I can be—given the right reward," He winked.

She stifled a laugh, flicking a glance at Rebekah across the room to share her amusement. "Oh, I believe you, good sir. Do excuse me, I must... circulate. Thank you." Mary curtsied to the old man and disappeared into the crowd of colourful people.

Klaus had thrown a ball in celebration of all the village's hard labour for the year's harvests, inviting hundreds of people all around the country to attend his party. Mary sauntered through a sea of nobility that parted for her absentmindedly—her demeanour demanded that level of respect—while her dark red dress glided across the ballroom floor.

Upon seeing Mary coming over, Rebekah dismissed a lady she was talking to, to welcome Mary's company.

"Mary, dear god. That awful, pompous old man was surely drooling on you," She recalled their earlier eye contact. "What a dreadful sight."

Mary whacked Rebekah's shoulder and smirked disapprovingly, "Play nice, Rebekah. For you know his eldest son is absolutely gorgeous and shall make for my late-night snack."

Raising an eyebrow, Rebekah sipped from her chalice and mischievously remarked, "Do not be too sure of that."

Mary tilted her head, turning around to skim across the crowd for the old man's son while asking, "Why would that be?"

"If Elijah has any say in the matter—"

Mary whipped around and glared at Rebekah, "Oh, you! Do not bring that up again."

"Mary, if you were not so blind, I would have no reason to say it."

She rolled her eyes in response and downed some wine, but Rebekah didn't seem to be done with the subject.

"Do you not see how he looks at you? You have been the fixation of his heart for years now, and you do not see it. Lest you ignore it more; he has been looking at you all night. And I suspect he will not stop any time soon."

Mary grew annoyed with her friend's tenacity of Elijah' interest in her, so she groaned and made her way to refill her drink. On her way there, she heard Klaus come up behind her, slightly drunk.

"Mary, my dear! How wonderful it is to see such a pretty face amongst the hideously mundane!"

She grinned, "You are impossibly drunk once again, Niklaus."

He responded by leaning his back against the wall and offering Mary his drink, "And you are impossibly sober. Drink."

She chuckled at his boisterous behaviour, then grabbed his chalice and downled all the contents, to which Klaus applauded her and grabbed another drink from a servant passing by with a tray of them.
