I am on my knees ooEver since Amma learnt her mother was going to stop Minal from getting married to Nasir, she hasn't been her self. She pleaded with her severally but she had to give up at a point seeing how serious her mother was. But all she knew was that she just couldn't sit back and watch her mother ruin everything. She has to do something. It kept on hunting her making her have sleepless night. Minal has gone through a lot in this life at her very young age. The last time she checked, Minal never liked Nasir so something must be up. She thought.
After crying all day and starving herself, the night seemed to be a very long one for Minal. Earlier that day, she decided to have some fun with her neighbors Stephanie and Rachel hoping she would stay away from her troubles for sometime. Rachel is a very rough driver and Stephanie doesn't even know how to drive so that task was left to her. She had mad fun and decided they'll go out more often. In the little time she spent with her crazy friends, she forgot all about Nasir, Umar and her family.
She saw Mallam Ado praying so she didn't bother horning. She parked the car leaving it opened so he would bring it in when he's done. She gathered her gown and began to run into the house. She has to use the toilet immediately in order save her bladder. The boxes she saw in the sitting room upstairs made her stop dead in her track. Clothes were scattered everywhere in the room. She turned her gaze to her mother and then to her aunties. "Masha Allah. Minal ta samu kaya." she heard an old woman say. It was then it dawned on her but she just didn't want to believe what she was seeing.
She forgot her manners. She didn't utter a word to anyone including her mother. She ran to her room and feel on her bed digging her face in her pillow. She forgot about the fun she had some minutes ago, she forgot about Umar's good morning message that made her day. She forgot about the liquid waste that was now making her stomach hurt. "Minal!" she heard her mother call softly placing a hand on her shoulder.
She was in no mood to talk to anyone. She wants to be alone. She wants no shoulders to cry on. "I want to be alone Ummu. Please" she said in between sobs. Her mother planted a kiss on her nape and left. Minal stood up and after locking the door, she went to the bathroom where she also performed ablution and prayed two Raka'ah. She spent hours in sujood crying to Allah. She left that position not because she was satisfied but because she was tired.
She took her diary which she hid under her bed and pulled an old picture of a cute chubby girl on the laps of a handsome young man. The man who meant everything to her. The man whom would never sit back and watch people force her to do what she doesn't to. She hugged the picture tightly and continued crying but this time, harder. "I've missed you daddy. Why did you have to leave so soon. I miss you Abbie. I love you!" she said now drawing hearts on his face with her thumb.
She dusted her diary before she began to flip through it. As she went through it, it would get to a point where she would cry her heart out and also where she would smile sweetly with the tears streaming down her cheeks till some get into her mouth. Some moments are just so special that everything would stick to your memory and it would be as if it happened the previous day or something few hours ago. Clearly could she remember on her 18th birthday.
She came back from school drained out and the only thing she could think of was food and her bed that she didn't notice the brand new car parked in front of the building. She made no plans to celebrate her birthday because she considered it unnecessary. She was beyond surprised when she met her father at home.
"Abbie! " she cried falling into his arms. "Happy birthday Amina Sagir Alkali" he whispered into her ears. How he felt when he called that name cannot be expressed. "Thank you Abbie. And you message was the best thing I've read in years. I love you Abbie". "I love you too baby" he said planting a kiss on her forehead.
He was the first person to wish her happy birthday and she couldn't help but soak her pillow with tears after reading his brief message. She read the message like a hundred times before her mother came in with a cake.
18 years ago, Allah blessed me with a priceless jewel which I can't thank him enough for. You are my everything Amina and you are the only valuable thing I have possessed in this world. Happy birthday Amina Sagir Alkali. Abbie loves you to the *cube* of infinity."What do you want as a birthday gift?" he asked. "I want anything Abbie. I would love and cherish it as far as it comes from you." she replied. "Even if it's a pen?" he asked.
"I'll use it occasionally and even if the ink finishes, I'll keep it like that and pass it to my generation."
"Minal can be so good with words " her mother who was overhearing them in the kitchen said to her self.
"What if it's a key? " he asked with a smirk. "My generation will still get to see it. I'll store it like a diamond. He brought out a key from his front pocket.
"And will you also store the car? " he asked smiling down at her. That was when the idea hit her. Her Abbie bought her a car. "You bought me a car?! " she asked and without giving him a chance to reply, she pounced on him. "Thank you Abbie. You are the best. "
"Calm down Minal. Don't you know I'm already getting old and I'm not as strong as I used to be. And moreover, you've added weight in a short period of time. I'll babe to add BON BON in your name. " he said leading the way outside. Her mother's persistent knocking forced her to return her diary to its place, wash her fave before opening the door. "You've been crying? " she asked placing a hand on her shoulders. "Come Amina. We need to talk." she grabbed her daughter's hand and led her to the sitting room. The boxes were still and just the sight of it makes her flinch.
"Tell me you don't want this marriage Minal and tomorrow, well return their clothes and call it off" she said softly. Minal saw the pain in her mother's eyes and it was so obvious that she had also been crying. Her face was red, her voice was cracking a bit and her eyes were swollen. She doesn't like Nasir but she knows agreeing to Mary him is the only way out for her. At least he loves her.
"It's not like that Ummu. I'm just afraid to leave you." she said in between sobs and her mother smiled muttering "Alhamdulillah". She wouldn't want Anty Bara marrying her daughter off to someone she hardly knows and who might end up maltreating her. "Shhh! Don't you know women are destined to leave their parents and start a new life with their husbands. Remember I left mine in Sudan and came all the way to Nigeria. Please Minal, I don't want you troubling your self. Just keep praying hard OK!? "
They chatted for a while which helped in cheering Minal up before her mum went downstairs and came back with a plate of food and a cup of Zobo drink. She watched her daughter eat in silence and she made sure she emptied the plate before she stood up and left to pray Maghrib.
Minal kept on tossing and turning all night. She knew she has to worry less in order not to make her mother feel guilty but it's not that easy. The least thing she expected that morning was a call from Amma.
"Our Amarya (our bride) she heard Amma say the moment the she brought the phone to her ear. "Ango (groom) Minal teased forcing a smile. "How have you been darling?" Amma asked. "I've missed you so much " she added.
"Alhamdulillahi. What about you? I've missed you more" Minal said folding her hijab. "So what's up. I was surprised when I saw your wedding I. V but at the same time, I was happy. So you finally gave in huh? " she is whispered into the phone.
Minal let out a sigh before she spoke. " it's not as if I have a choice. Just pray for me Amma. Please. "
"IN SHA ALLAH I will. Stay safe OK! We'll talk later" Amma said and quickly hung up. Minal's last statement really touched her and that's another reason for her to do whatever she can in order to see her mother doesn't ruin this marriage.
"Ya Allah! Please don't let my mother succeed in ruining this marriage and please put a stop to the difficulties Minal is facing" Amma prayed to the Most Beneficent,Most Merciful.Phew *breaks knuckles* who has started falling for Amma already?
