"The plane is about to Take off please. Switch off your phone please!" Minal heard and quickly texted back "I love you too" to the soul whom she spends the entire day with on the phone before doing as she was told. She looked up at the air hostess who was waiting for her to switch off her phone. She let out a sigh and gave her the "I've done it. You can now go" look.
It's exactly six months since the wedding incident which Minal has totally forgotten about. Nasir surprisingly came a day before they left for Sudan and explained things to her.
"You aren't mad at me?" he asked. "Why should I? " she asked in between chuckles. "It's not as if it's your fault" she added. "Well, I guess things happened in your favour. You weren't really interested. I just... " he couldn't finish his sentence as he was forced to swallow the rest. The way she kept looking at him made him regret his words and without a word, he stood up and left only to call her later that night to apologize.
Coming to Sudan was the best decision to make after the incident. They had to find a way to avoid her father's relatives. Being around her Ummu and her grandmother is the best feeling ever. She feels Sudan is a problem free country and now that she had to go back to her father's land, it feels so different. She turned to look at her mother who was so engrossed in the newspaper she was reading. She looks so calm and as beautiful as ever. Minal couldn't remember the last time she saw her mother disturbed or a worried look on her face but things won't be the same as long as they're coming back to Nigeria.
"I know I'm beautiful Amina. Don't you think you're looking too much? It's only your late father that looks at me like this" Ummu said with her eyes fixed on the newspaper she was holding. "Who told you you're beautiful Ummu? The person must have said it just to please you" Minal teased.
"Well, Umar Faruk wouldn't have fallen in love with you if I was ugly baby. You would have been worse." she said placing the papers on her laps. "Well, it's not even as if you're beautiful, we're just managing " Ummu added.
" I can't hear you Ummu. Try some other time" she winked at her mother who rolled her eyes at her. She grabbed a book from her bag and continued to stare at the book cover. Now that Ummu has mentioned Umar, she can't concentrate on anything. The past few months have been a very memorable one indeed.
Umar made her fall helplessly in love and also taught her how to swim in it. She knows and believe he's so romantic but yet, she can't find single reason that makes him romantic. Neither does he send Good Morning messages nor Good night. He doesn't always say I LOVE YOU and if she can clearly remember, he said it just once to her and that was when she offended him. Instead of yelling or ending the call angrily, he said "I love you Minal" so softly that she wouldn't have heard if she wasn't listening attentively.
She switched on her phone when the plane finally landed. "Alhamdulillahi" she muttered helping Ummu with her hand bag. "Thank you for choosing Dana Air" the air hostess said cheerfully and Minal in return gave her a Fake smile.
"How was the journey" he asked. "Well, let's say boring and tiring. I find the air hostess annoying" she replied. She was finally in her room and all she could think of is to change the bed sheet and have a zoom off.
"Just because she asked you to switch off your phone? Like seriously Minal" UMAR'S said laughing so hard. "There is nothing funny Umar." she said pretending to be angry. "Oh oh. It's OK baby. I'm sorry. So are you ready for my visit tomorrow?" She put the phone on loud speaker, placed it on the bed and began to strip. "Are you really coming tomorrow? " she asked now looking into her handbag for her charger.
"In SHA ALLAH. I'm already in Lagos." he said sounding so excited. She was also excited. She would finally get to see him after 10 good months. "Where are you presently?" she asked.
"Rock View Hotel" he replied. She shrieked and covered her mouth with both hands. "Bye bye" she said and ended the call. "Wow! She's amazingly strange. " he said to himself hugging the pillow tightly. As promised the next day, Umar came to visit immediately after Asr prayers. "Where's he?" Minal asked her mum. She was so nervous and confused. "He's in the visitor's parlour. " Ummu replied laughing at her daughter's nervousness. "Quickly dress up Minal and don't keep him waiting." she added and closed the door behind her.
Minal stood up from her bed and walked to the mirror. She'll looks great with just a khol, eyeliner and lip gloss. It didn't take up to five minutes before she was done with the makeup and rushed to her wardrobe in search of what to wear. "Just await my surprise." he remembered him say and became more nervous. What's the surprise. What did he get her? How is she going to react when she sees it? She continued to ask herself.
"Ummu! " she called storming into her mother's room. I can't find what to wear Ummu!!" she cried .
"Minal! Don't tell me you've kept this gentleman waiting. Come let's go" After seconds of searching, Ummu brought out a red Laffaya. "Here. Wear this now." she said placing it on the bed.
"Laffaya? Ummu isn't it too... ?" Minal complained. "Isn't it too what? " Ummu asked letting out a sigh. "I don't know Ummu. I just don't want him to feel as if I dressed up for him. " she complained.
"Then who are you dressing for? " Ummu asked rolling her eyes. " I love you Ummu. Thank you" Minal said hugging her tightly. With the help of Ummu Minal got dressed in five minutes and then another drama began.
"What should I say when I get there Ummu. Why should I do when give me my surprise? Isn't this colour too flashy? Ummu should I wear a red lipstick or the lip gloss is fine? Ummu had to drag her down to the parlour. "Now go in" she said releasing her daughter's hand. "Do I look nervous Ummu?" she asked and instead of replying, Ummu opened the door slightly and Minal had no choice. "Ya Allah. Please don't let me drool when I see him" she muttered and entered into the living room saying the Salam softly. After spending thirty minutes with his eyes fixed on the door, Umar finally averted his gaze. He couldn't retain himself any longer. Never in his life has he imagined a day like this. A day where he is unsure of what to say. A day he spent hours rehearsing on what to say and how to act. "Just be yourself Umar. The Umar she has known" Al-Amin said over the phone but it just seemed so impossible for Umar.
How is she going to act when she sees my surprise? Happy? Sad? Confused? Angry? He wondered staring at the glass of water in his hand when he heard the door open.
With each step she took closer, his heart beats faster. His eyes were fixed on her while hers were on the floor. Why hasn't he ever noticed that Red is her color. He wouldn't forget to tell her to wear not but Laffayas. She suddenly looked like a bride.
"Waalaikum Salam" he said remembering she said the Salam when she entered. He watched her open mouthed as she approached him and sat beside him on the rug.
"If this is what I get for waiting for so long, then I'll wait a whole day or more" he said softly. He knew he was grinning sheepishly but he couldn't help it. "I'm sorry for keeping you waiting. I didn't know you'll be coming soon. You said till after Maghrib. " she said and as she spoke, she couldn't gather up some courage to look up at him.
"I couldn't resist any longer that's why" he replied with his gaze fixed on her fingers that were drawing circles on the rug. Minal looked around for her surprise without him noticing and she was surprised she couldn't find anything. Maybe the surprise was to make her surprised that she couldn't find any surprise.Hello sweethearts.
