"Thirteen weeks, four days, seventeen hours, five minutes and two seconds. Haven't you had enough space? "
She read the message and let out a sigh. Why can't he just accept the fact that she no longer wants him. She's well aware of the fact that he's going to hate her for this but sooner or later, he'll get to know her reason and once again, that Hatred will be replaced with LOVE. As usual, she deleted his message not because she wants to but because she had to.
Her hands were supporting her chin as she thought of what she'll do to make Umar despise her. She purposely didn't attend Al-Amin's wedding not because she doesn't want to. She would have at least attended for Nabilah's sake but she refused hoping Umar would despise her for that but nothing changed. What's his heart made of? She thought biting her nails.
Her phone vibrated and she hoped it was another message from Umar.
" We can meet by 10:30 am"
She glanced at the wall clock and it was just 9:07. She quickly rushed downstairs in order to make breakfast and get ready. She's tired of giving Dr Kelvin excuses for being late. She ended up not making breakfast was done in less than thirty minutes.
"I'm off to school Ummu!" she hugged her mother and pecked her on the forehead.
"What should we be expecting today." Ummu asked using the hem of her hijab to wipe the khol that stained Minal's eyes.
"I can't really tell Ummu. When I come back. "
"I don't even know why you insist on having an advanced knowledge in catering. The one you had earlier was enough ai. No more catering school after this."
Minal squeezed her mother's hand and rested her head on her shoulder. "I promise Ummu. Your wish is my command." she said. "I better start going Ummu. I wouldn't want Mrs Kelvin to scold me for being late to her class. Miss me less!"
As usual she wasn't there on time and Dr Kelvin was already occupied. " you can sit at the waiting room. I won't really take long. But if you prefer to go and come back.. "
"No it's fine. I'll wait. Take your time. " she watched him leave after quickly muttering a 'thank you'.
The hospital waiting room was nearly desserted. Minal was alone. Utterly and forlornly alone.
The door to the waiting room opened softly and then closed behind the man who barged inside. She sensed new danger as her spine stiffened. She looked up and her eyes met a tall dashing young man who stood silently and watched her and as usual, with his hands tucked in his jeans pocket.
"Minal! " although the raspy voice sounded different, she recognized it instantly. She sucked in her breath. It couldn't be him. Not him! I not here and not now!
Her nervous clamoured as she desperately fought to deny Umar's presence. "Ya Allah let me be wrong "
He was now striding purposefully towards her as she tried as much as she could to compose her self. She wasn't wrong. It was Umar. Umar the brashly arrogant, softhearted egoist she once loved intensely. Deep inside her, she knew she still does but she has to stop.
" Assalamu alaikum" he said sitting beside her. How she was reacting to his presence made him more confused. He hasn't met her since the day she told him she wanted space. He gave her the space she requested for not because he wanted to. But because he loves her to the extent that he can sacrifice anything to make her happy.
He didn't understand the space she was talking of not until he asked Al-Amin on his way home that faithful day."She told you she wanted space? " Al-Amin asked ."You know what Umar. I'll advise you to just leave this girl because... "
" I didn't call to ask for your opinion Al-Amin. Just tell me what the damn space meant. "
"Fine." Al-Amin said in surrender. "It's just like a break up "
"Thank you " Umar said and ended the call.
Neither did he call her nor he visited her after that day. He only kept on sending her a message every morning counting the seconds, minutes, days and weeks asking if she hasn't had enough space. He kept sending messages but didn't get any reply .
"Waalaikumus Salam " she said more like whispered. They sat in an awkward silence before he spoke. "You are the least person I expected to see here. How are you? "
"Alhamdulillahi" she replied playing with the leather strap of her purse. Another moment of silence before he spoke. " My friend's wife put to bed last night so I came to pay them a visit. How about you?" he asked.
"I came here with a friend" she lied. "You look like the patient Minal. You've lost weight"
The door to the waiting room opened before she could answer. "Miss Sagir Alkali " she heard Dr Kelvin's voice.
"Uhmm.. I have to go. Bye" she turned to leave when he grabbed her hand. "You are sick Minal. What's wrong with you ?" he asked. He was so calm that she wanted to cry.
"I'm fine Umar. Thank you so much" she managed to say.
"Do you love me? " he asked steely as she shivered at the coldness of it.
"I have to go Umar. Please." she said and tried so hard to free her hand from his grip. He clenched his fist in anger. The lady standing in front of him is already pissed him off. Minal could tamper with a saint's patience and God knows, he's no saint.
"For Allah's sake tell me the problem Minal. You asked for space and I ..."
She suddenly started crying forcing him to swallow the rest of his words. "I'm sorry if my presence upsets you. It's so obvious it's me you you don't want Amina. I'll respect your decision. All I want is your happiness. Assalamu alaikum."
She watched him walk away fighting the tears that had already formed in her eyes."Are you alright Miss" Dr Kelvin asked the moment she sat down. She simply nodded putting on a fake smile.
"Dr it's so obvious I'm loosing weight? My mom also noticed that? " she said when she was about to leave.
"Your mum? I thought you said you had no family? " he asked. "Yes Doctor. I went to see a family friend on my way here and I call my mother. You know how it is in the north where every elderly woman whom you relate well with is just like your mother."
He nodded. "Well, I'm sorry to say but that is the part of the symptoms. And why don't you inform your aunt about your health condition. You'll feel much safe when you have someone to share your sorrows with. Although you are doing so well by yourself. I must confess Miss. I've never seen someone as strong as you are. I wish there was a way I could help."
"It's alright Dr Kelvin. I'm doing fine and thanks you for everything. "Umar left the hospital without seeing his friend's family. He sat in his car for hours in the parking lot as she didn't trust himself to drive. He watched Minal get into her car and drove off.
Why did she take so long? He asked himself. And where is the friend she said she came with? And who was that doctor? He has to find out now.
He got down from his car and went into the premises again. He was so lucky to find the doctor who called Minal earlier in the hallway.
"Excuse me Doctor. " he rushed to catch up with the doctor who was also in a hurry. "Just a moment" he said panting.
"Good afternoon Gentleman. I'm very busy now. If you can wait "
"Fine I will " he watched the Doctor leave them went to sit at where they sat with Minal. After waiting for more than 45 minutes, he was finally seated in the doctor's office.
"So how can I help you gentle man? I have limited time with you."
"Thank you for your time Doctor..... "
"Kelvin."
"Oh thank you Dr Kelvin. Uhmm! I'm here to make some enquiries about my Uhm... sister's health. Amina. "
" I don't get you gentleman " he said glancing at his wristwatch. " I meet new patients everyday so don't expect me to... "
"I know Doctor. Umar interrupted. I was talking of the girl who left some while ago. Amina Sagir Alkali. "
Dr Kelvin looked shocked. "You say you are her..? "
"I'm her brother " Umar answered. "Miss Sagir Alkali told me she has no family. I've been treating her for over five months now. And I must confess she she's a really strong lady. "
"For over five months?" Umar repeated. "What's wrong with her?" he asked half of him not he had no intention of picking it. "Ummu" he read the name on the screen and quickly excused him self. "Just a minute Doctor " he said picking the call.
"Umar where are you. Can you quickly come over. It's Minal!! " he heard the panicked Ummu say.
"Calm down Ummu. I'm coming right away." he ended the call and rushed towards the door then remembered Dr Kelvin.
"I'm sorry Doctor. There's an emergency at home. I'll be back later." Dr Kelvin could sense how panicked he was. "It's alright. Take your time"he said to no one in particular because Umar was already gone. "Does that mean she lied to me? " he asked himself.Any idea on what's wrong with Minal??
