The sun beams down on me. It's hot today, I thought as my stomach rumbled. I should get something to eat, but what would be the purpose? I'm going to die soon. That's when I heard someone cry out, "Help! Is anyone here? Please I need food and I have these monsters chasing me!" Two limping people walk into sight. "Come on. Is anyone out here? My brother is hurt!" Moans and groans come from behind them. Five sicks racing each other for their next meal. I look around trying to find a way to help. Spotting a bunch of rocks, I throw them at the sicks, yelling, "Over here you bastards!" They seemed to be enraged by my name calling. Running as fast as they can to me. Happiness dwells inside me. I bought then some time and I can finally die. No more than a few meters away from me, they stop. Looking at me with perplexed faces. Like they've forgotten why they came over.

One takes a closer step and completely freezes in its tracks. The rest limp away, but that one stays. As if, in some sort of trance, I walk towards the frozen monster. It's jaw snaps at me in warning, but I continue. "Hey what are you doing?" A warm hand pulls me back. I turn, facing the two- boys. "Thomas?" Is it really him. I haven't seen Thomas since my 15th birthday. "Wait, little mo? It's really you." He pulls me into a tight hug. Coughing interrupts our heart warmed moment. My head snaps to my baby cousin, "Eric." Tears brim my eyes at the sight of him. His light brown hair covered in blood, pale skin bruised and dirty, and that look of impotence in his brown eyes.

My eyes travel his entire body. Stopping at his thigh. He was bit too. No. Why him? He's only eleven. I quickly rush them both to the van, locking it behind me. I look out of the window making sure we didn't attract anymore sicks.

That sick is still rooted to the ground. Frozen. Shaking my head, I plan the figure that out later. Right now, my priorities lie within my family. Thomas gently carried Eric to the bedroom. "What happened?" I ask, from the door frame. Sadden eyes fall upon mine. "I was picking him up from his friend's house when we heard about the 'zombie outbreak'. Supposed to hide up in the mountains at mom's cottage, but a bunch of those things rammed straight into the car, eventually knocking us over. People started shooting in panic. We barely made it out. When things went downhill here, we just arrived." His voice grows quiet at his last words. "I didn't know they got him while we were trying to escape the crash. I couldn't protect him." I hold him in an embrace, watching Eric sleep. Later on, he asked can he have some time with Eric alone and I nodded, only if he agrees to being careful. No telling when Eric will turn.

Speaking of turning, why haven't I done exactly that?

Exhaustion falls over me, forcing me into a dreamless state.

"Thomas I'm scared. What's going to happen to me?" Tears falls down his cheeks. "Nothing little brother. You're going to be just fine. Go back to sleep." Little Eric does as his brother says. But what he doesn't know, is he isn't going to be fine. His brother takes a pocket knife out, placing it at his brother's neck. The tip so sharp it starts to already pierce through his skin. Just the tiniest bit a blood trickles down onto the bed. Causing Thomas to freak out. He breaks down. He can't kill his own brother. He'll rather end himself. Yeah, that's a good idea, he thought, until he could no longer hear his brother breathing.

His heart had stopped. Face pales. Blood pours from his eyes. It's happening. Oh yes, his brother is turning. Yet, he won't believe it. I mean how can he? Eric's fingers begin twitching; eyes stirring behind his lids. His hand lifts up and eyes slowly open. Thomas grabs his hand, sobbing. A moan escapes from Eric's mouth, sending Thomas into shock. It's really happening. Eric springs to life, jumping on top of Thomas. Tearing apart his skin with his teeth. Eating like a maniac. No mercy. Thomas screams and screams. Begging his brother to stop this, but his brother is gone. He's nothing, but a monster now.

"Ahhhhhhh! Ericcccc, stop!" I jump awake, rushing towards the cabin. What I found behind those doors, will forever haunt me. Eric savagely tears through his brother, until he screams no more. Until there is nothing, but an eerie silence. I could do nothing, but watch. Watching as my cousin kills his brother. He then looks at me. His once brown eyes now bloodshot red. Pieces of Thomas hanging out of his mouth, stuck on his teeth. We just stood there. I didn't move he didn't either. Banging sounds on the van's door, wakes me from my trance. I guess the screaming attracted them. Eric still doesn't move. Even as Thomas' body begins to twitch, coming back alive. He sits up, guts falling, staring at me with the same eyes. Neither of them move though. Just like that sick from earlier. Just frozen.

I warily back up, shaken from what's before me. I trip on my own feet, landing on the ground. Tears snake down my face. I'm crying. Crying, because I could've protected him. Crying, because I couldn't protect either of them. Anne, Eric, and Thomas. Why can't I protect anybody? I should just stay alone.
