The next day I wake up in the bed in our room and surprisingly with a smile on my face.
Don't know why. The bed is also empty but warm. He must've just gotten up.
I hurry to the bathroom, take the quickest shower of my life. I see that there is a slight breeze through the window so I put on black stockings, a black and white mid-thigh plaid skirt, a cream woolen jersey and black ankle high heeled boots. My hair is thin so I just straighten it out a bit, apply some eyeliner and red matte lipstick. Perfect. I take my phone then head downstairs.
I know that there is no work for myself today but there is work for Chris and I'm tagging along.
I enter the kitchen and as usual, he is sitting with his back dancing me, on his laptop.
"Morning." i greet. After yesterday, we hadn't spoken much. I really enjoyed that kiss and I will not deny that I want to kiss him again nor will I admit it.
"Good morning." he greets back, his voice monotone.
"So you're going to work today?" I ask as I once again search for my granola bars.
"Everyday Anja." he says.
I bend down to see if maybe its in the cabinets that are at the bottom but to no avail, "So, uh, Blair gave me the day off and I was wondering if maybe I could tag along with you?"
I hear him choke on something, probably his coffee,"What? Why?"
"Because I don't know what else to do here. I finished all my books in that first horrible week here and I don't know my way around the city." i open the very top cupboard and bingo.
"Fine. But let me warn you, its pretty boring in my office."
"That's okay. I'm used to just sitting and doing nothing." I say as I try to stretch to the top shelf in the cabinet. That is where my bars are. Who the hell put them there!?
Suddenly I feel a presence behind me and my arm slowly rests down my side. My head goes down too.
Bubblegum-mint. He's standing behind me.
"You could've just asked." And then I see two granola bars in front of me.
I take them with shaky hands, "Thanks."
He chuckles because he knows exactly what he does to me but I don't, "Time to go." he shouts and I hear the front door open.
Excitement pools inside of me as I rush to the door with my two granola bars and phone in hand.
I catch up with him, my hair flying behind me in the wind. I love that. He opens the garage and the six cars, five excluding mine, stares right back at me.
I squeal in excitement and clap my hands. I hear the sound of the car doors unlocking and see the lights going on and then off. He chose the gold and black McLaren.
I go to the passenger door but before I open it I ask him, "Can I drive?"
"No."he says immediately and gets in.
I pout when I get in the car but he just chuckles. The roar of the engine starts and I don't know why I'm so excited.
We drive out of the estate,"Even my great grandma can drive better than you."
"If I were alone in this car I'd be at work by now."
"here." he hands me a black card, it looks like a credit card.
"What the hell is this?" I ask, taking it.
"It's a credit card. It has money on it."
"How much?" I ask.
"If you knew that, you'd faint." OK, it's a lot.
"What do I do with it?" I ask, examining it.
"It's yours. Do whatever you want with it."
My eyes widen, "Christopher, I can't accept this. Please take it back."
"No refunds sorry. And I have way more money than that in my bank account. Stop being modest and take it." he pushes the card back to me.
I'm about to reply when my phone starts ringing. I look at the caller ID and god no. I put the phone back down, not answering it.
It rings again and again and again but I don't pick up.
"Are you going to pick it up?" Chris asks when it rings again.
"No. And thanks for the card. " i say slowly.
"Pick it up Anja. You're going to have to speak to him someday." he urges and I realise he's right.
"Someday maybe but not today."
"I'm going to pick it up if you don't." i look at him.
"You can't do that."
He smirks back at me and I know he's dead serious, "Trust me darling, I can."
I groan and wait for the phone to ring again, when it does I pick it up.
"Hello?" I say.
"Hi. Anja. Its me. Shawn." no duh hey.
"Oh, Shawn. Hi." I say sounding surprised.
"Hi. I called you many times but you didn't answer." he says, his voice holding relief.
"Yeah, sorry. I was still in the bathroom." i look over to Chris to see him almost laughing.
"And now you're on the road?"
"Uh... Yeah. Chris had my phone." i stutter, biting my lip. Please believe me.
"Chris? Who's Chris?" he asks confused.
"Oh?" I drag, "Who's Chris?" I look at him, "My fiance." i say.
"I see you've accepted it." and now his voice is sad.
I sigh, "Shawn, we all would've had to make peace with it sooner or later. Please don't do this. Not now."
"Then when Anja? I miss you like crazy. I need you." he pleads
The difference between Chris and Shawn is clear. When Chris speaks to me I get these butterflies and tornadoes in my stomach but now, as I'm speaking to Shawn, I feel nothing.
"Shawn,i made a promise and I intend to keep it but no matter how many times I see you, I'll still be married to him." I say the last part lowly.
"So it's just like that? You're not coming back to me?"
I gasp, "Of course I am."
"That's enough for me." his voice is less sad.
Before I can reply, Chris's voice butts in, "We're here." and we are. The car stopped in a dark parking area.
"Is that him?" Shawn asks.
"Yeah. I have to go. Bye." before he can respond I switch off the call.
Then I slap Chris's arm.
"Ow. What was that for?"
"For making me speak to him." i say and get out.
"Forgive me dear Anja, for I am dearly sorry." he stops me. His hands go around my upper arms and he kisses my forehead. I sigh, why are things so different?
"It's okay. Let's go." i walk ahead of him but I realise I don't know where the hell I'm going.
I turn back to him, "You better lead the way."
He chuckles and walks next to me. His hand brushes against mine now and then sending tingles right through my body.
I shiver involuntarily. My eyes fall to my right hand that's now intertwined with his.
I look up at him but he's just walking ahead. A small smile makes it's way to my lips as I look forward.
