I felt him before I saw him. It was the most irritating feeling that I had gotten a familiarity with his presence that I knew when he was near.
I hated it.
"Hey," his softly brusque tone sounded as he took the empty seat to my left.
He placed a folded shirt to the table and said with am amused glint in his eyes.
"This belongs to you." I realized it was my jacket. The one I had permanently lent him last night but perhaps he didn't know I did.
"You didn't get into any trouble, did you?" Not that I cared in the slightest.
He was redolent of vetiver and a faint melted cheese.
His eyes were steady and piercing regarding me with shrewd fascination.
Dark dark eyes...
"It's nothing unusual for us to go home naked. I had it laundered and all, Fiona's fast with clothes."
Who's Fiona?
"Thanks again uh... it's Senoy right?"
I raised a brow.
How the fuck did he know my name?
And as if he saw the question in my eyes he grinned cheekily and stood from the seat.
"That's one mystery solved." He remarked, slinging his book bag to his broad shoulder.
"Don't think the others will be easy to come by." I found myself teasing.
Ezra winked and turned around to meet up with his friends even as they stared incredulous at our exchange.
Them and the rest of the cafeteria.
"Okay freeze, put your hands where I can see them." Eloise pointed a cucumber at me.
I blinked in confusion, looking around in case she wasn't talking to me.
"What?"
Toby sat in the chair Ezra had just been in and peered into my face as he asked.
"Did Ezra Khan just leave this table? Did he forget something here before you sat?"
Eloise had her near empty tray placed opposite mine as she settled down, biting into her gun-cucumber.
I tapped the folded jacket and responded. "He was returning this. I lent it to him last night after-"
"The revel!" Eloise gasped as she curved her chair to face me. "I forgot to ask you how it went but then you're stubborn not to get a cellphone."
I smirked at her and stripped the remnant stalks off the cherry before throwing it into my mouth.
"I didn't get to stay longer than I wanted to."
Toby narrowed comically at me as he intoned, "Why, cause Ezra was there?"
I nodded not meeting any of their eyes even as they stared in disbelief. "What the hell was he doing there?"
I shrugged, wondering the same thing and our brief conversation last night came flitting to memory.
"But he made a scene that I was practically thrown out by Mab." I frowned.
It was all I was going to divulge to the Vincente twins because there wasn't more to say anyway.
But I found myself scrutinising the short conversation with Ezra just now; his words, his mannerisms...
Normally the Ezra Khan everyone knew, didn't bother being even close to nice to return a jacket or take the trouble to speak to anyone who wasn't part of the Legion.
Which was the surprise of everyone who'd seen us in the cafeteria.I had Physical Ed next and I was much eager for some chance to let off steam of frustration.
Yes Ezra's interest was bothering me.
Terence Claire was Redwood High's coach and coordinator for all three sports taken by the school, which included wrestling.
And being the first week of school, he's been busy gathering his perfect teams for the season.
Toby and I left the locker room after changing and we made for the gym where the seniors had their class.
"So you think this year, you'll let Coach T convince you to be on the wrestling team?" Toby asked.
He'd been on the wrestling team since freshman year, a feat not since achieved since Jean's year.
I gave a 'stop-trying' look because he had been bugging me to accept the admission into his sport even though I'd topple him from his throne.
He knew I was only that good from my tussles with trolls, wood nymphs and the occasional Fey knight in the Moors.
Bladecraft, every form of hand-to-hand combat which the Fey was surprisingly well versed.
I'd paid a hectic price to learn it all and learn it well.
All for the need to become a knight in Queen Mab's guard.
I shook my head, flexing and stretching my arms as other students came in for the class.
"You know it wouldn't be fair, if I used all my training for personal glory."
He scoffed and began some push ups. "Please like that ever stopped last year with Harry Radley."
I chuckled as I remembered throwing the six foot three Legion Boy/jock to the mat countless times so he could feel less about himself.
Plus he'd been making mouths about me. On the bad side it brought me to the attention of Coach T.
"Or the Legion Boys who populate the teams like flies on a week old nachos."
"Very apt description, Toby."
And then Coach T came in looking as menacingly serious as always to distribute us across the regimen exercises he had for us. After the first period it was time for the Harvest.
It was what Coach T called him selecting his contenders for the wrestling team through a small demonstration.
Toby won three of his matches, to no one's surprise. He was always first in the Harvest.
His height and lithe but we'll formed build gave him a advantage and it didn't help that he was a Shifter- even without changing, he slipped out of holds like a snake and had reflexes of a cheetah.
I was hopeful that Coach T would pass me over this year but he was resilient in having me in wrestling tights. But really I think he just wanted me to be beaten so he can find an excuse to let me off.
But at the nick of time when the period was about to end, Coach T hollered.
"St. Ours! Get in here." He pointed to the mat.
Toby wiped his face of sweat and grinned knowingly at my groan of exasperation.
I moved forward but halted as I heard Coach T called my opponent.
"Khan!"
A sudden chill ran down my spine.
Please tell me it's a cousin or something.
"Hmm surprised you even signed up. Don't you have your slots filled with football and track?"
Yes he does. He's stalking me! It was aggravating seeing the impulsive smirk on his face as he walked up on the mat.
"There's no harm in indulging in some fun, coach."
Cocky motherfucker. I'll show you fun.
"Hi again." Ezra smiled daringly as he stood before me.
"The fuck are you up to?" I snarled at him.
He cocked hisheadbto the side as of not understanding my anger.
We placed ourselves in the familiar stance and waited for Coach's signal.
"It's a class, Senoy. I thought I'd have something out of the ordinary today." He quipped holding onto a second meaning.
Coach T gave his signal and Ezra lunged.
He was fast, going for my lower body but I accosted a defense taking him around his midriff and steadying myself.
His large arms were around me, a heavy scent of his perspiration and shampoo distracted me for a moment.
A moment that he would have take advantage of easily but I recovered quick enough and twisted out of his grip just as I hooked a leg over his thigh and flipped.
He was flat on his back on the mat with me pressing down with my knee.
Everyone was quiet but him. Because he was laughing.
It was thrilling sound, rich and deep and the way his eyes closed to almost slits and the stark dimples...
No, keep away from those snaring features.
"What are you laughing about?"
"You're good." And he raised himself up and close so that I saw the soft amber flecks around his pupils.
"Yet another mystery solved."
Huh?
I stepped away and went back toward Toby, agitated by that boy who was already with a few of his friends throwing a smirk at me.
"That was intense." Toby noted handing me a towel.
"That boy's insane." I mouthed.
"He's probably trying to get back at you or something. Don't worry he'll get bored when he sees you're impervious."
Yes because he was mercurial asshole.
That much was well known by all the strings of girls he'd dumped at the side when he was done with them.
