Agent V hated it when she disrupted the space and time continuum.

As she sat at her desk in Hydra's San Diego control base, she read over one of her papers that she had written for an English assignment years ago.

In the paper she addressed the idea of parallel universes. The Greek philosopher Plato had theorized that there were two forms of reality. There was the imperfect form, which we all could see, and that was tethered to the real form, which was beyond human understanding. However, Agent V thought that there was a third form. If reality was like Ping Pong, then those two forms were the paddles, and the ball was the third form, an alternate form. A parallel universe.

In contrast to common belief, Agent V had lied about the night she had died. When Erica had tried to kill Tori, she hadn't merely walked over into the world of the living. No, it was much more complex than that. And she would never forget it.

Upon being hit by the spell, she had felt like she was falling. Then she landed on a concrete bridge. To the north of the bridge was a dark forest with looming pillars of foliage that she assumed were trees.

The bridge spanned over a chasm of at least a thousand feet. How deep the chasm was, she didn't know because eerie wisps of fog drifted out of it.

South of the bridge was a massive mirror, spanning as far as she could see. But the mirror was not a normal mirror, it was a bit unusual.

On both sides of the mirror, at her feet, were three objects. A sword. A spear. And a weirdly perfect butter pecan ice cream cone that looked like it was straight out of a Red Velvet music video. Looking at her reflection, she thought she saw the "other her" on the other side of the mirror move on her own. Then, the other her picked up the spear and threw it at the mirror.

Acting on a sudden impulse, Agent V found herself running toward the mirror as the "other her" still stood on the bridge. She was going to touch the mirror. Why? She had no idea, but she felt that it had to be done. The split second she touched the mirror, the spear made contact with the mirror from the other side, just to her right. The mirror shattered.

First, she thought she was sinking in something, then she felt a burning sensation, then she found herself on the bridge with the "other her." She tried to speak, but could not.

At the other side of the bridge, in place of the forest, was a doorway with a giant exit sign. Simultaneously, without so much as an optical cue, both agents ran toward the doorway and disappeared. Then everything went black.

Upon returning the real world (was it even real?) one version of her had immediately returned to the Water World fiasco, but she had not returned until a day later.

After returning to Water World, she made her way to the Hydra base via some of her connections. Fast forward a few months and she was back up and running as if nothing had ever happened.

Since then Tori deduced two things. First, her death had resulted in the creation of a parallel universe. The parallel universe was symbolized by the other side of the mirror. Actually, it was not even a mirror in the first place, just a transparent piece of glass. The "other her" had acted independently because it was an alternate version of her. Second, breaking the glass brought her parallel version into the same world as the real one.

But now she had one looming question: Which one was she?

However, the day after her reflection, she received an assignment bigger than any she'd ever received before. An assignment that gave her an opportunity to put her past behind her and move on.

But, to understand the assignment, you must first understand how Hydra was organized at the time.

Like a military organization, Hydra had many ranks. Agent V was next to the top of the totem pole. The only person above her was some guy who say behind a confidential desk in a confidential location and discussed confidential matters. He was Agent I.
