Chapter Ten: Fear Factory

Camel hooked her arm under Kit's legs and grabbed her back, swinging Kit into a bridal style. Kit clung onto her companion, literally shivering with fear.

In Kit's eyes, shadows climbed the wall. Red eyes flashed from around every corner. Darkness crept along the floor, monsters peering from around tables and chairs and doors. Cracks started running along the ceilings, walls, and floors, as Camel rushed through the massive maze of the mansion. Neither of them looked back, though a bitter and cold curiosity nipped at them to see what horror might be waiting for them.

As Camel swung around a corner and rushed back down the stairs, Kit screamed.

"Jesus woman, what?!" Camel hissed.

"It's a fucking melting goo of skin and bone and it's got TEETH," Kit whined.

Hot tears burst from Kit's eyes as she started shaking.

"I don't wanna be here," she whispered.

Camel, slowly backing up into a random room, reassured her, "I promise, we've been through worse and we can get through this."

She dashed into the room and quickly shut the door behind her, temporarily displacing the two from the hidden monsters. Camel set the jittery Kit down, still supporting her.

"Where's the light?" Kit said through the dark.

Both hands searched the walls until Camel struck a panel. It wasn't a normal switch, but rather a giant lever. Pulling it up (and it was surprisingly heavy), the lights burst on with a sickening artificial brightness.

The light shone on a wide and long stone staircase, the gray slabs leading down into an unseen abyss.

"Probably the basement," Camel mumbled.

"Yeah, the basement with the MURDER LAB in it," Kit snapped. "We shouldn't go down there."

"Oh yeah?" Camel said. "And then what? Deal with that glob of human skin? Whatever was laughing? The hellhound upstairs? Or how about the other countless monsters that are hiding in this stupid mansion?"

Kit shut up, her wary eyes scanning the blank walls and the cold stairs. "I'm beginning to see why this job was S class."

Camel sighed. "C'mon. Whatever's down there isn't getting any younger, and neither are we."

The two set down the stairs, which ended much more quickly than they thought. The basement wasn't lit either, so they split up to find another switch.

Kit wandered the basement, hands sweeping across the wall. Her footsteps echoed, sending chills up her spine and racking whatever jumbled nerves were left. Suddenly, the lights blasted on, the noise loudly traveling to the back. Now that she could see, Kit noticed the vast, seemingly endless wall stretching and curving down, smaller steps leading off with a greenish haze. The basement itself was just as huge, lab tables, bookshelves, metal racks, and countless other drawers and desks filled up the enormous floor.

Camel ran over to Kit, who kept surveying the room.

Kit pointed out at the giant room, glaring. "Murder. Lab," she grumbled.

"Yeah, yeah, I know," Camel said quickly. "It's like a fear factory in here."

"How much do you think he's hiding?" Kit wondered.
