The two headed back upstairs, armed with a few scalpels and smoke bombs they had found stuffed in some drawers. Kit kept tightening her belt and shifting her shirt, trying to settle the files. Camel rolled her eyes, taking the lead.
"Can you see anything?" Camel whispered.
Kit shook her head. "No, but I can hear something." She tilted her head to the left, searching for sounds. She shook her head and straightened up. "Just some creaky floorboards. Probably just monsters."
Camel chuckled a bit. Kit glared at her. She shook her head, still smiling. "No, it's just you used to be so freaked out about the boogeyman when we were kids and you... you just sound so calm now, just talking about monsters."
Kit sighed and poked Camel, signaling for her too keep moving. The slipped past the stairs, sneaking into the living room. Kit gasped lightly and grabbed Camel's arm.
There was a person sitting on the couch. They had bright blue hair, gray skin and was apparently...
"Dude, there's some naked person on the couch," Kit whispered.
"KIT," Camel hissed.
"No, I'm for serious, like they're actually naked. Also singing," Kit noted. "Quietly, but they're singing. Can you see them?"
"Np. It's probably a monster. How do we get past it?" Camel asked, gripping her scalpel tighter.
"No, I wanna talk to them. They sound... you're not gonna believe me, but they sound scared."
Kit pushed past an agitated Camel, slowly making her way to the person sitting on the couch.
"KIT!" Camel whisper-shouted. "DON'T BE THE WHITE PERSON THAT THAT DIES FIRST! YOU'RE GONNA DIE! STOP! YOU'RE SO, SO STUPID! I'M GONNA PUT 'STUPID' ON YOUR GRAVE!"
Kit ignored their partner and turned to face the person on the couch. Their hair reached down to their knees, tangled up in their hands and pooling around the couch seat. Their eyes were a blank white, surrounded by little black splotches... almost like freckles.
"Hey," kit said quietly. "I don't want to hurt you, I just wanna know who you are. Are you okay?"
The person stopped singing, and whispered something Kit couldn't hear.
"Sorry, can you repeat that?"
"Your friend," The person said. Unlike their song, which was quiet and shaky, their voice was clear and beautiful, like crisp darkness on a winter night. Kit tried to place it, perhaps as a color, but pure darkness only came to mind. Like notes, on a piano key, Kit thought.
"Your friend, they don't trust me. They're going to hurt me," the person said again."No, they won't. I promise," Kit reassured them. "What's your name?"
"I forgot," they answered. "You'll soon forget, too."
"What do you mean?"
The person started crying, but their voice remained clear and strong. "You'll forget. We all do. Forget."
"What-?"
"Have you ever felt sad?" The person interrupted. "So, so sad, like you're... drowning. You're... dying, like you'll never feel warm again. Like colors don't exist, or you're always watching trains pass, like life... she hurt you."
Kit felt a crushing pressure on their chest. It was hard to breathe. Their head hurt, their thoughts were cloudy and they couldn't see anything except the person. It was hard to look at them.
"She hurt you, she left. She abandoned you. Did she really want you?"
Kit heard muffled voices, someone was screaming. But they couldn't focus. They couldn't see.
