Everything went better than planned. The distraction was set (Kit randomly challenged some beefed-up pierced dude to an arm-wrestling match,) and Camel easily snuck the paper off the board. It looked easy enough: “Guard a ring for a weekend at Elonoise Manor.”

“Alright,” Kit said, breathing heavily. They snuck back to their room. “So, you wanna just head over now? It looks close enough, and we’re supposed to start tomorrow.”

Camel nodded. “Let’s just pack up on things, make sure everything’s secured.” Her hands shook as she spoke.

Kit glanced at her partner. “Dude, you okay?”

“I just stole something from an S Class board! No, I’m not okay!” Camel slammed the request onto a coffee table, her voice full of anxiety.

“Hey, I get it-“

“Do you?!” She shouted. “I can’t do this! We just got here, and now we’ve just gone behind their backs to steal something! I can’t just throw away their trust like this! You seem to be handling it fine, though, you stupid ‘I-freeze-up-when-someone-asks-me-anything’ fucking war machine!”

Kit’s hazel eyes glazed over, filling with annoyance. “I know. I was-“

“Oh, yeah, right, ‘cause you were raised on the battlefield! Such a sob story,” Camel snapped. “The only thing I’ve ever worked for is finding a guild that’ll take me in. Take us in, thanks to me picking your sorry ass outside Cyn City. I really don’t want to ruin it by being kicked out.”

Kit stared at Camel, appalled. “You’re the one who had the idea! I helped you! You can’t just back down now. We have the job, and we’re gonna take it.”

Camel sighed. “Fine. I just…”

“Family’s tantalizing,” Kit said. “I know.”

Camel sighed and sat down. “What if we do get caught? What then?”

“We won’t,” Kit said. She started packing her backpack, and grabbed a notebook. Camel rolled her eyes. Her roomate seemed to be obsessed with them, always writing and making lists and doodling.

Kit flipped open the book to a blank page and started writing. “We’ll sneak out… No, we should just blatantly go out through the front doors. Anyone sees us go out, they know where we are. Being caught in a lie is much easier without any witnesses. We’ll just lie, saying…” She stopped, tapping the end of her pen to her chin, staring at the floor.

“Decor,” Camel said. “We should lie about getting decor and food and stuff.”

Kit nodded, scribbling again. “Yes. We’ll say that - what about the bags?” She muttered. “We can plant them somewhere outside the guild-”

“And then people won’t see the bags going out,” Camel said. Kit looked at her quizzically. “Or going back in,” she said slowly.

“What about a different lie?” Kit suggested. “Maybe we could be going out of town to visit a relative who has some of our things, won’t be back in a few days, things like that…”

Camel smiled. “I love it when you say ‘maybe’, like you’re trying to defend yourself against several people calling you out when you’ve told each one so many wayward lies that don’t fit together at all, and they all just clash against one very conflicting truth.”

“Yeah, like that’s relatable,” Kit muttered.

“Well, it wouldn’t be the first time,” Camel said.
