The two split up (staying in sight, though - they wanted to cover as much ground as possible, yet neither wanted to get lost) and searched the lab.
Kit bent down at a table, poking through the beakers (some of which were still full) and sorting through papers.
She picked up and scanned one that read:
SPECIMEN #304
Danger: LETHAL
This specimen is based on the mythological creature of a Mimic - one who mimics the deceased. Feeding off of live people, then turning into the ones she ate, she can escape any trap or magic. Almost immortal. Very fast, sight is poor but hears everything. Uses echolocation. Keep locked up for the night shift. Can not be seen with the ring, but can be seen if intoxicated. Goes after rapidly beating hearts and the guilty ones.
Kit set the file back where it had been and tried to calm down. Her nails dug into her palm, drops of blood hitting the floor. She wanted to scream or cry, but it felt like everything had been put on hold. Ignoring her own shaky breath, she plowed forward, scanning through more documents.
Most of them were about different specimens, either captured or artificially made. Then, there were ones about potions and spells. There was one that Kit found that made everything click:
POTION #2,780
Mind Control
Use On the workers, butlers, and maids. Doesn't give the user the ability to control minds, but does dull the logic and the senses of your brain. Makes a person very obedient and willing to do anything you say. Makes the person have fewer oxytocins and fear in general, as well as a) messes with facial recognition and color receptors and b) if you consume enough, the effects never wear off.
Kit gasped and tucked the file under her shirt. She grabbed a few more, all stuffing them under her tank top. She shifted her cloak to hide them well, in case anyone caught her. She grabbed a blank piece of paper and a pen, scribbling her notes to help her think better.
"KIT! KIT, HOLY SHIT!"
Kit stood up, still holding her plan. Camel was weaving her way through the desks, waving a file labeled THE RING.
"Dude! Dude, I know why you're fucked!" She said breathlessly.
"That was very reassuring," Kit remarked dryly.
"No, no!" Camel continued. "No, you know the ring? The weird thing? It says that it's made out of gold, pyrite, and dragon bone. It's got this weird charm-spell thingy that makes the wearer see things that are invisible and basically injects a poison so they can still see the things hours after it's been taken off.
"It says that, um, it also heightens your sense of fear, so you're body is hyper-aware and you can stay alive, but I guess it's fucking with your anxiety, so it's why you're all jittery. Dude, there some weird shit going on here!"
Kit pulled out a file from her shirt. "I found a bunch of documents explaining the creatures and potions in the house. We have enough evidence to stop his project for good!"
"Hey." Camel seemed confused. "If he was doing this weird secret operation, then why did he put up a job for us?"
Kit shrugged. "I just think he never expected us to make it out alive."
