you're both stuck looking at each other from across the table. the public sounds of people chatting, doors opening, drinking pouring. everything tunes out in the presence of you both. your eye lingers to his eye patch while his lingers on the healing patch of flesh on your wrist.
maybe meeting was a mistake.
maybe meeting was what needed to happen.
words are stuck in your throat and you dont know where to begin. so many things are clawing at your head, anxiety builds up like bile in your throat and he looks pale in the face. his bangs cover part of his eyes. he's doing it again. hiding his shame. his weakness.
but he's still stronger than you.
" I'm leaving "
you dont know how to respond. your hands are gripping your cup so tightly you think it might crack. yet you still cant seem to speak. why is that?
" Im sorry. this is the only way i know how to protect you. protect us "
you dont like his reasoning. you hated it yet here you are, not protesting as you sit there, silently taking it. your face is pulled down in a unfortunate scowl and his gaze starts to look everywhere but your eyes.
your head is screaming at you to say something. anything. but what comes out isnt what you really meant. you regret it but cant seem to speak up to take it back. his pale face returns with a sad tragic smile and your eyes widen at your mistake.
you sit there looking at him lifeless.
you sit there looking at the empty seat.
you sit there looking at the cup of coffee thats gone cold.
