(Toothless' POV)
Hiccup gave Moon a 'and your answer is?...' face and she jerked her head toward the sky. I yelped in happiness with the other dragons and riders as they mount their dragons. She jumped into the air and looked around warily. I sniffed the air and got a whiff a fear-scent from Moon.
That's odd.
"Maybe she's afraid of something." Hiccup whispered from my back.
"I agree. What do you think Stormfly?"
"I think-" She was cut off as Moon suddenly shot away in a random direction. I pumped after her with my strong wings. We quickly flew through the sky, so we didn't have time for talking. After a while the land turned to swamp and I narrowed my eyes as Moon soared closer to a big river. She landed in a clump of trees and we followed suit. She looked around, as her ears flicked up and down. She rotated her head around 180 degrees and I looked with her. I spotted some weird looking houses that were enormous. Moon saw them to because she flicked her tongue in and out as a smile bloomed onto her face. I trotted up to her, Hiccup still on my back.
"Well, uh, the view is great but the 'what' that lives in those huts is 100% going to eat us." I said awkwardly. She flicked her ear irritably toward me.
"The 'what' are actually a 'who', and they are called Mudwings. Their appearance is large, flat heads and the nostrils are on top." She took a breath before continuing. "The mothers don't take care of them, but they have something called a 'bigwings' which is the oldest sibling. He or she helps the other dragonets out of their eggs and leads the group until he or she dies." She added after seeing my shocked expression. "They can't breath fire if they are cold. They can hold their breath for up to an hour, blend into large mud puddles, and they are usually very strong. Their queen is Queen Moorhen." I stared at her in shock with the other dragons.
That must have been a lot of information to memorize. She huffed and then growled fiercely.
"Now be quiet and let me see if I know somebody here." She crouched low and looked through a green-leaved bush. I crouched low as well and the other dragons followed my lead.
"What is it bud?" Hiccup whispered from my back.
"Shhhh. Moon is already irritated." I growled.
"Don't worry bud. I'm sure we'll-" He trailed off as a big brown head emerged from the hut. It was followed by a long winding neck, a huge set of wings, front legs that shone in the golden sunlight, an odd back leg, and a heavy, thickset tail. Hiccup and the gang gasped in awe with the other dragons.
This dragon is huge. Moon suddenly reared up on her back legs and I panicked.
"Clay, over here!" Clay, the huge dragon, turned his head.
"Never mind Pheasant and Reed! You don't need to start a search." He cried. He thumped over in a heavy limp, excitement and concern in his eyes. "Moon! You're back!" He gently grabbed her but yelped in surprise. "What happened to you?! Doesn't matter! Everyone will be so relieved. Who are your new friends? With scavengers riding them? Explain when we get back to Jade Mountain Academy. Queen Glory will be so relieved. So will the rest of the destiny dragonets. And your winglet! Did I mention that everyone will be relieved? In the excitement I forgot." He wrapped his wings around her in a hug and she vanished behind the warm brown wings and scales. "Let's go say hi to my brother and sister. Pheasant!" He called. "Reed! Come out here." Another head stuck out of the hut. It was a little smaller than Clay's. The dragon trotted over slowly. A slightly smaller dragon followed him. Clay let go of Moon. "Peasant, Reed. This is Moon of the Nightwing." He rumbled. I tipped my head.
Nightwing? I thought there would be more. Maybe something happened to them and that's what scared Moon earlier. I
hope she'll live through what the other Nightwings apparently didn't. She is special. These dragons are huge, but she is small. She must have transformed with some crazy magic thing because there is no other way she could have changed. My thoughts were all over the place. I guess I'll have to wait and see.
(Hiccup's POV)
She flicked her ear irritably at Toothless and hissed angrily. She started growling and rumbling to him in a series. She took a breath and then goes on. Moon growled something short and Toothless' expression turns to shock. After seeing his expression though, she roared, rumbled, and growled a long string of what must have been sentences. When she was done every dragon had a shocked expression and a slightly agape jaw.
Maybe she just gave them a lot of info about the new dragon we're about to see. She huffed and then growled something before crouching low. Toothless and the other dragons follow her lead and crouch low behind a row of bushes.
"What is it bud?" I whisper. He growled in reply.
Maybe he's worried.
"Don't worry bud. I'm sure we'll-" I trail off as a enormous brown head emerged from the hut. A long, snaking neck followed it, along with the biggest set of wings I have ever seen. The front and back legs had amber under-scales with warm brown on the top. A thick tail followed the rest of the body. I looked closer at one of the back legs and it was all scarred. I gasped in fear, awe and surprise with the other riders and dragons.
Biggest dragon EVER. Moon suddenly reared up and yowled to the big brown dragon. The big brown dragon turned his head and yowled back into the hut. Then he thumped over in such a heavy limp that I thought he was going to fall. Or crush us. He grumbled and scooped Moon up in his big wings, but yelped in what sounded like surprise. He started growling and roaring very quickly. He finished and tightened his gigantic wings around her. He roared without turning and a head just a tiny bit smaller stuck out of the doorway. The dragon who walked out looked kind of like the first big dragon. One who was a little smaller followed him. They trotted over slowly. He set Moon down and rumbled to them in a friendly way. Toothless tipped his head at the last part, which left me curious. I wish I could hear what dragons are saying. I thought in desperation.
(Moon's POV)
I was set down when Pheasant and Reed came out of the hut.
"Peasant, Reed. This is Moon of the Nightwing." Clay rumbled.
Nightwing? I thought there would be more. Maybe something happened to them and that what scared Moon earlier. I
hope she'll live through what the other Nightwings apparently didn't. She is special. These dragons are huge, but she is small. She must have transformed with some crazy magic thing because there is no other way she could have changed. I guess I'll have to wait and see. I heard Toothless' thoughts and shook my head in fear.
What if he finds out about animus magic? Wouldn't be good. About the same time, I picked up a thought from Hiccup.
I wish could hear what dragons are saying. I widened my eyes at the thought of them being able to understand us.
Turtle could secretly do that, but would Turtle want to?
"Did you find her?" Pheasant asked quietly.
Ouch.
"I'm right here." I said politely, even though I was fuming at the dragon riders.
They must have down something to me while I was tranquilized. Pheasant's eyes widened.
"Sorry Moon. You look completely different." I smiled at her and roared as loud as I could. Reed, Pheasant, and Clay joined in. I stopped when I was out of breath. I looked over to find all the riders and dragons staring at us.
Wait, no. Not at us. Behind us. I whirled around and found three Mudwings staring at us. Well, it was more like they were staring at me. I blinked, remembering that most dragons had never seen a Nightwing before. Especially since they all vanished into thin air.
"Hello. My name is Amber. My sisters are Egret and Cyprus. We heard about your losses." He nodded at Reed and Pheasant, who looked sad for a second. "We were wondering if you had any open spots. Our other sibs died of a sickness. May we join you? I will give up my status, my bigwing status to be with your group."
"Let me think about a permanent situation. For now, you may stay in our hut. I'm assuming that your hut was taken over by other Mudwings." He jerked his head toward the hut and the three Mudwings dipped their heads, but didn't move.
"Are you a Nightwing?" Amber asked.
No, but she won't understand.
"Yes, I am a Nightwing. The only one left after the disappearance of my tribe. They are gone now." I sighed and looked down at my talons. I felt two wings spread over my back, but after a moment, one was removed.
"Hey." It was Clay. "The others will be excited to see you. Do you want to go back now? I'm sure Reed can figure this out on his own." He smiled at me.
Who spread the other wing over my back? I looked around and saw Toothless about three feet away, looking awkward. The other Mudwings were looking at him curiously, but didn't say anything. They walked in the direction of the hut a moment later.
"Yes, Clay. I want to go home and see my friends and queen again." He nodded, grinning.
"Well, then, gather your friends and lets head out."
"Wait! Clay, can you show and tell them about your home?" I said, remembering what they wanted. Clay looked excited at the prospect of that.
"Of course Moon." He waved his wings and turned to the other dragons. "Welcome to the Mud Kingdom. Most of the land is swamp, but we have some shore villages. Now, who has questions?" Toothless raised his wing.
"Why do your parents not take care of you? Moon said that the Mudwing parents don't care for their young. Is this true?" He asked. Clay looked slightly crestfallen.
"They have a breeding night once a month and lay their eggs in a shell of hard-packed mud. They make it warm and leave. When the eggs hatch, the first one out is called a 'bigwings'. He or she helps the other dragonets out of their shells by cracking them open. The parents aren't usually there. The 'bigwings' is the group leader of the siblings." He informed them about the Mudwing parents. "Sometimes, though, like in a war or something else, a group loses to many 'sibs. When that happens, two groups who have lost to many will form together and make group that way. My mother sold me for at least two cows. That is basically how much they care. Are you ready to go, Moon?" I could tell he wanted to leave, so I agreed, but I still had one more thing to do.
"Almost. First, I want all of your names. I'm only talking about the dragons, by the way." I said. Toothless tipped his head.
"My name is Hookfang." The orange one with stripes said, twitching his wings.
"My name is Barf." The head on the right said. "And my name is Belch." The left head continued.
"My name is Skullcrusher." The rainbow Rainwing-like dragon finished. I knew the others names.
"Are you ready now Moon?" Clay asked.
"Yes." I nodded enthusiastically.
"Then gather your friends and let's go." He ordered gently.
"Stormfly." I called. "Cloudjumper, Toothless, Meatlug, Skullcrusher, Hookfang, Barf, and Belch." I finished the string of names and blinked as they turned to me. "Are you ready to see my world?"
And leave me alone? My mind went on. All the dragons nodded and nudged their scavengers, who had gotten off. The scavengers quickly mounted their dragons, looking nervous.
"Are you ready?" I asked Clay. He nodded and I realized that he was saying goodbye to his brother and sister. "Lead the way Clay." Clay spread his wings and everybody behind me gasped in surprise. He gave them a confused look before taking off, pumping his big wings. I spread my wings and I took off after him. The other dragons followed me. We flew for a while and I saw the tip of Jade Mountain. I did an excited flip in the air.
"What are you so excited about Moon?" Toothless asked. He looked curious but I could tell he was sad.
Probably me leaving them. I soared closer to him.
"I get to see my friends again. I hope they are alright. And seeing my Queen." I said, excited.
"Queen Moorhen?" I gave him a confused look.
"No, my queen is Queen Glory. All the different tribes have their own queen. And, yes, we do go to war because of that. We had a really nasty one a couple months ago. I'll tell you later, when I'm not focusing one keeping up with Clay." I replied before shooting ahead. I swooped in circles around Clay, who looked excited. I didn't question it.
"Ready to see your friends? I know they're ready to see you." Clay called to me as I flew in loops around him.
"Totally ready." I yowled back.
"Go ahead then. I'll keep your friends back so they don't get eaten or anything." He soared down and yowled to the other dragons. "You seven, follow me!" He turned toward the forest below. Toothless gave me a worried look. I nodded my head the direction Clay had gone in encouragement. After they all turned and dove toward the trees, I whirled around and blasted toward Jade Mountain. I saw the entrance cave with two sad faces staring out toward the horizon.
One white and silver.
One tan and light brown.
My friends.
Qibli and Winter.
