Jeongguk is sprawled across his bed, staring unseeingly at the ceiling. Hoseok is on his bed on the other side of the room, reading or browsing social media on his phone or something. They share a room with Taehyung, who is out today, letting the two sets of couples of the house have their own rooms.
Jeongguk rolls onto his side, curling up a little, eyes focusing on the corner of Hoseok's bed. In his peripheral he can see his hyung's long legs bent at the knee, propped on the bed, the lean line of his torso. That's about it.
"What if I'm a Beta?" He asks quietly, honestly not meaning to let his thoughts come aloud.
"Hm?" Hoseok asks, lowering his phone to look at the younger boy.
Jeongguk blinks and clears his throat. "I said, uh, what if I'm a Beta? Since I haven't, you know...presented yet." He avoids Hoseok's questioning gaze, keeping his eyes on the other bed.
"Aw, Ggukie," Hoseok coos and it makes Jeongguk feel small. "I still presented, and I'm a Beta. Your senses still change, you become more attuned to smells and body language. It gives you the tools you need to be a good Beta, to notice when you need to stop an escalating Alpha or calm an Omega, whatever. You'd know."
Jeongguk tries not to pout, but...He's heard of late bloomers, of course. But he's nineteen and hasn't presented yet, and most people do by their eighteenth birthday. He's sick of wondering and, honestly...he feels like an outcast. The others, they fill their roles so easily. Yoongi and Namjoon as Alphas; Jin, Jimin, and Taehyung as Omegas; and Hoseok as their Beta. Jeongguk feels like he's slipping through the cracks.
"Gguk? You okay?" Hoseok sounds concerned, and Jeongguk then realizes that he's spaced out.
He knows he should voice his worries, probably. It can't be good to keep bottled up. But...he doesn't want to worry his hyungs. He can handle it.
"I'm tired of waiting." He says simply, rolling onto his stomach to bury his face into his pillow. Hoseok doesn't say anything. Jeongguk assumes it's the end of the conversation, but then the bed beside him dips, a warm hand coming up to rub between his shoulders. He relaxes unconsciously into the comforting touch.
"Are you worried about what you're going to be?" Hoseok asks quietly, moving his hand in soothing circles.
Jeongguk shrugs as best he can laying flat. "I used to be, maybe. But now I just want it to happen. I don't care what I am anymore, I just want to be something."
Hoseok is a good Beta, Jeongguk realizes. An amazing Beta. He can get anyone to open up without really trying. "You already are something." Hoseok stresses. "Our golden maknae, fan favorite Jeon Jungkook. Your status doesn't make you who you are; it's just another facet of you. It won't define you, and no one would think any less of you for whatever you present as." His hand moves up, gripping Jeongguk's shoulder. Jeongguk turns his head to face him, looking up at him through the fringe of his bangs. Hoseok is smiling softly, genuine and kind. "It'll happen eventually. Don't stress about it, we'll handle whatever happens, Kookie."
Jeongguk smiles and is about to thank Hoseokie for his kind words when Taehyung bursts through the door, making the both of them jump. "What's going on in here? It's so quiet! Are we having a cuddle pile?!" And suddenly Jeongguk's got a back full of squirmy, giggly, heavy Kim Taehyung. Hoseok laughs at them, bright and true, while Jeongguk scowls and tries to throw Taehyung off of him, but the elder yelps and tightens his arms around his waist. He holds on for dear life, shoving his face into Jeongguk's neck. Jeongguk gives in, settling back into the bed with Taehyung still on him. Taehyung chirps, a uniquely Omega noise, and rubs his nose behind Jeongguk's ear as if he has an active gland to scent with. It warms his heart, making him feel included even though Tae's not getting anything out of it like he would if he scented Jimin or even Hoseok.
"Let me roll over, you dope." Jeongguk grunts, shifting under Taehyung to try and get on his back. Taehyung lifts up literally just enough for Jeongguk to get on his back before plopping back down, nuzzling into his neck with another of those chirps. Jeongguk throws his arms around Tae's shoulders, looking over to see Hoseok back on his own bed, giving them a fond smile that looks a lot like it says see? I told you. Jeongguk smiles back, letting Taehyung continue to "scent" him.
He knows that whenever he does present he'll have his brothers by his side. He'll welcome the new part of him but won't let it define him, like Hoseok told him.
But, damn, he just wants to know what it is.
