Lola feels that he is behind her. She turns around slowly.
She needs to remember to stay calm if she wants to help. She feels a lot of fear. She thinks it comes from herself, but is it? The wolf looks at her, not knowing if there is danger. He doesn't trust her. He needs to let her help him.
She holds her hands up. She read that she should do this. It is the only thing she has to go on.
The light appears; at least it works. The wolf growls. She feels his anger on top of her own fear. And she is a little proud of what she has done so far.
He looks at her. He knows that the calmness she influences him with is a good thing. And he changes. He shifts back.
Lola looks down, and her hands fall to her side. They're back to normal. She did it. He is human again because of what she did.
'Lola, do you know what has just happened.' It's Sam. She knows vaguely who he is. He sounds scared, even a bit panicked.
'You know the myths?' she asks him, to be sure and throws him a pair of stretchy shorts and an oversized shirt she put in her car to be safe.
He nods slightly: 'You don't mean....'
'It is exactly that. The stories are true. I didn't believe them at first, either. But you're the first wolf, the first member of the pack.' It's true. She did not know if she believed the legends. Now she does because she saw.
Sam swallows: 'The Cullen's, they're really ... vampires' He has trouble saying that last word out loud.
'Yes, vampires, and most of them are dangerous. They're the reason you exist. You and your future pack will have to protect everyone from them.' She says, surprisingly calm. She never expected this to be really happening. She should have seen it coming. 'There is a treaty with the Cullens.' She remembers: 'They need to be left alone if they keep up with their part. There is more to it, but I think it's best if Billy Black tells you the rest of the story.' Lola tells him.
'Why him?' he asks.
She hopes she is right, and he knows. He is one of the elders. If there is someone who still believes, then it will be him. Maybe she could learn from this as well. 'He should know there is a new generation of wolves.' It's all she says before she turns and tells him to follow her.
'You said, "You and your future pack" you mean that others will follow?'
'Yes, I suspect that there will be others who will transform.'
He looks at her. He looks terrified. He is right; what just happened was frightening, and they know others will have to endure it the same way. She doesn't say anything.
Billy stares at the two of them from the door opening. Lola talks, but he doesn't seem to be listening. Sam is not intervening. 'This is happening now!' Lola says in a stern voice. She is almost yelling, but she tries not to. Jonah and Jacob are still in the shed with her sister, and she doesn't need them to hear her.
'How do you know....' Billy starts to ask.
'I think we should do this inside.' Lola says.
Billy nods and moves backwards.
Sam follows Lola, who knows her way around. She's been here often. But this time, she wants to be anywhere but here. She sits in one of the dining chairs and crosses her ankles. 'It started a year ago.' She doesn't like explaining it because it means she must go back to when it happened and remember everything. 'First, I felt certain energy levels, and then my hands started to glow, and sometimes they even gave light. I know it sounds bizarre. I didn't want to think about it. I found some journals in the attic at home.' Lola explains. She looks at their reaction, and when both of them stay quiet, she continues: 'Those books and journals explained everything. And that is how I found out about my gifts. It is my job to help protect people. I have a connection with the pack; it's how I knew Sam transformed. I will know it when someone else changes into a wolf the moment it happens. I intend to help them.' Lola relaxes. She didn't realise she was holding her breath. They need her help, but there will be a lot to learn. She doesn't know if she will be able to. She looks back up at Billy. What would he say? Would he believe her?
'A long time ago, there was someone like you, Billy tells them: 'There is no information out there. Only a few rumours.'
'Oh.' She is disappointed. Now that she stepped up, she hoped for more: 'Can you help Sam? Tell him more about the wolf thing?' Lola asks Billy, and he nods in response. Then she looks at Sam again. At least he'll have help. And maybe she can figure out what to do herself or with help from Sam and the future wolves. 'I think it's a good idea to discuss all of this tomorrow.'
He nods but stays silent. Lola gives him her number, so he can text her if he needs something.
When Lola leaves, she hears Billy explaining things. She closes the door behind her and looks at the shed.
