Lola walks up to where her friends usually hang out. She sees Jessica sitting next to the fire. She's on her phone. 'Hey.' Lola sits next to her best friend.
'Good! You're here.'
'Jess, it cannot have been that bad yet.' Lola laughs at Jessica's face: 'It's only been an hour. Where are the others.'
'At the tide pools,' she says careless: 'They will be back any minute.'
An hour later, it's time to eat something. Lola makes both her and Jessica a sandwich. While they eat, the rest comes back.
Lola finishes her food; Jessica sips from her lemonade. 'Go talk to him.'
'Who?' Jessica asks.
'Who? She asks like it's not obvious.' Lola grins: 'Mike, you've been staring at him.'
Jessica gives Lola a cold glare. Lola stares back, and Jessica caves: 'Maybe you're right, but....'
'No excuses. You talk to Mike all the time.'
'That's when you're around.'
'Jess.'
Her friend walks away. She takes her phone. No messages.
She looks up and sees people approach; Jacob approaches Bella, and Jonah and Paul walk in her direction. They're both laughing. Jared would typically be with them, but he is at Sam's now.
'Who do we have here.' Jonah says.
'We were here first.' Lola grins. She cannot help but have fun with Jonah, even when she is worried about everything. It all seems to disappear when he is around.
'Yes, but it's La Push.' He says while he sits down. Paul is already gone.
At the end of the day, Lola walks in her sister's direction; Mike and Jessica walk directly behind her. 'We're going back.' She says loud enough so her sister can hear her. Jacob stands next to Bella.
'Ok,' Bella says. Jacob follows: 'You have sand in your hair.' He tells Lola when he's next to her.
'Seriously, Jake, I didn't know that.' Lola tells him. And then laughs.
Lola holds her lemonade and walks to her sister's room: 'Bella, do you want....' She wanted to ask her sister to watch a movie. She walks in. Bella sits against her bed, staring at the floor before her. Bella looks up when she hears her sister. 'Are you ok?' Lola says and sits down.
'I think I am.' Bella says: 'I don't know. You told me to read about everything. I didn't believe it, or I did, but....'
'You didn't realise what it meant.' Lola says: 'And now you do?' She told Bella about the supernatural. She took it all a little too well. 'What is wrong?'
'Edward is ...' Bella stares slowly. She doesn't look sad or happy: 'He is a vampire.' She finishes her sentence fast, whispering.
'Are you sad? Angry?' Lola asks.
'I'm scared.' Bella admits. Lola puts her arm around her sister, and Bella lays her head on her shoulder. 'I'm scared he'll stay away from me because I'm just human.'
'Do you want to talk?' Sam asks Emily. She stands in front of him, at the side of his house.
'No.' She sounds insecure: 'I don't think I want to, but I need to know. I keep coming here without meaning to.'
He cannot stop thinking about her either: 'What do you want to know.'
She looks at him, thinking, but then she just speaks up: 'How could you do this to her? Leah doesn't deserve this.'
'I know.' He says, trying to sound calm, keeping his anger away. He is mad at himself; he did this: 'If I could change it, I would.' He would because it would be better for her. He knows Leah wouldn't be hurt, but this is less important than how Emily feels.
'But why, why me?' She speaks louder: 'Can you tell me why, Sam?' She sounds more desperate than angry.
'I wish I could.' There is tension in his muscles.
She looks at him, and her breathing slows down: 'Why did you do this to me?'
He did this and changed her life. She didn't ask for this, didn't want this.
