It's Friday evening, and Lola is laughing because of something Jonah said. They're at his place, in his room, doing homework. She sits on the floor against his bed. She is trying to learn Spanish.
He distracts her with jokes or starts talking about anything that isn't homework-related. They catch up, pretend to do homework and watch a movie or play a board game. She'll have to find another moment to do her schoolwork. Tomorrow she'll go to La Push with her sister and her friends. Mike told everyone that the weather would improve.
She hasn't told Jonah she'll be at the beach tomorrow. 'Does he have glasses?' She asks him but isn't close to discovering who it is.
He looks back from behind his board. 'No, he has not.' He says.
'Is it...?' She says to see his reaction: 'Ok, I don't know yet.' She says while making adjustments on her board. She hopes he'll just be there tomorrow.
Bella drives, and Lola sits in the passenger seat. She looks out of the window:' It's fun.' She promises Bella: 'La Push, it's always nice.'
Bella relaxes.
It true. La push is always lovely. They hang out there and have a good time. There are no fights or even gossip that can be annoying. There is something about the beach that keeps everyone at ease.
Bella drives to Mike's parents' store. Mike walks their way and says: 'I told you the weather would be better.' He looks satisfied that he is right.
'Yes, you did.' Lola says. She sees that he is looking at Bella, who greets him silently. Lola waves at Jessica, who is talking with Tyler but stops to look at Bella and Mike.
Lola's eyes widen, and her body tenses up. It only lasts a few seconds; she knows what it is now, searches for her inner calmness, and relaxes.
'Are you ok?' Mike asks her.
When she opens her eyes, she sees her sister and Mike next to her, both concerned. Jessica is walking her way. 'I'm fine.'
Jessica takes her arm: 'Muscle cramp?'
'That must be it.' Lola tells them. She would say something if it made a difference. 'I think I'll get a painkiller at home.' She says: 'Can Bella ride with one of you?' She asks Jessica.
Mike answers quickly: 'Of course.'
Lola smiles at them: 'Thank you. I'll see you all there.' She says and assures her sister that she is ok.
Lola drives towards La Push to the edge of the woods. She never had the intention of going home. She knew this was where she needed to go because the next member of the pack had transformed.
She steps out of the car and takes the clothes she put in the back. She hobbles at first but changes to steady passes as she walks towards him: 'Sam, I'm on my way.' She thinks this but knows he'll hear it. She walks into the clearing, and there are two wolves this time. One of them is Sam. She doesn't focus on him but looks at the new addition to the pack.
Lola takes another step, but the wolf takes a defensive stand. She stops moving and tries to find her inner calm. Is she nervous, or is he? He is panicking, for sure. If this was happening to her, she would be scared. Her hands shine; she takes a breath and feels at ease, leading to a calmer process than last time. The new addition transforms back like Sam. Sam looks at her confused but turns around to see if Jared is ok. 'Jared...' He starts. Jared looks back, his eyes full of questions. 'I'll answer all your questions. It's... You know the legends?' He repeats what Lola has said to him.
'Is it like that?' Jared answers.
'Exactly like that.'
'And what has Lola to do with all of this?' Panic in his voice.
'Lola, maybe you can explain that.' Sam says and turns towards her.
Lola expected this. She would have to explain it again. 'I have certain gifts. You can say that I can help the pack, you guys.' She pauses: 'Like that light that made you calm enough to transform back.' This is going to change things. Jared, he is new to the pack and friends with Jonah. 'I try to help. But you're not alone in this. Sam...'
Lola cannot help thinking about Jonah. Will Jared tell him or not? What is going to happen? 'Sam is here if you have questions, and I want to help answer some of them if I can.'
Jared nods. Looking at her, seeing her differently now.
'Sam, you should take him to your house and explain everything. I will come tomorrow to see how everything is going.' Lola says she just wants to leave. What if Jonah finds out, and it changes how he sees her.
Sam and Jared walk away. Sam looks backwards to see Lola going back to her car.
Lola parks her car close by where she knows her friends will be. She takes her hands off the steering wheel and takes the keys out. She just sits there for a couple of minutes.
