Birds chirp as the sun rises over the island, my ears twitch at all the sudden sounds. I blink a few times before i fully open my eyes, to remember that I slept inside a hollow tree. I rub my eyes and slowly sit myself up. I knock my hand against my vine bandage and remember more from the night before.
A huge yawn escapes my mouth without warning. My arms stretch up to the sky and my wings expand open. The fire from the night before burns the same way it did. I carefully unwrap the vines from my face, to see how my cheek has either healed or deteriorated.
The last vine comes off my face and I drop it on the dirt. I lightly touch my cheek and it burns. I drop to my knees in pain, a cut like this have never caused me so much pain. I try to remember what plant I cut myself on. I stand up and trudge out of the tree. The sun blinds me, I cover my eyes from the harsh rays.
Once my eyes adjust to the lighting, I walk back to where I remember being last night. I look around for anything sharp that could of cut me. I cup my hand over my cut to prevent it from touching anything. I scan around where I believe I was last night. Some branches that have fallen or are hanging down seem to be where I could've cut my cheek, but none have blood or are poisonous. I know the plant has to be poisonous, because this isn't a regular wound.
I continue to walk around, looking at each plant at the same level as my face, trying to find the plant so I can treat the wound accordingly. Dark clouds begin to roll over the island again. This time they don't appear to be thunderstorm clouds, but snow storm clouds.
Today is the first day of threlleghvein, our four winter months. Usually in the first few week, consistent snow storms happen every day or so, meaning our island becomes covered in snow, except in the south end of the island, since there a no mountains, it only tends to rain there.
The snow will usually rise to about my knees, meaning we get quite a bit of snow. The first five storms we call the five hail downs. These storms usually last five to six hours non stop, and are usually a mix of hail and snow. The first storm for the month seems to be on its way, and it's possible that the hail will hurt, a lot.
I keep searching the plants, and I stumble past a tall, and odd looking plant. It definitely isn't a tree, its some sort of weed. I study it closer, and stand next to it to see if this is what cut my cheek. The plant itself looks beautiful, with large pink and yellow flowers, and long soft green leaves. The thorns on this bush look deadly, they are about as long as my middle finger, they are curved in different positions, some face up while some point towards the plant.
One large thorn that sticks out is at the exact same height as my wound, this must of been the plant. I rip a thorn off and take it back to the tree where I slept. On my way back I gather other ingredients that I can use to heal my cheek, healing herbs, special native plants, and my final ingredient, water. I've completely forgotten where the creek is, since I'm ever so lost.
Walking around when you don't know where you're going is hard. I walk what I believe is east, that way I can locate the east colony, and they can help me out. I stuff all the ingredients into my pockets and take off the ground. I fly higher than the trees to try and spot the east colony out. Its hard to see with all the fog rolling in because of the approaching storm.
My wings keep flapping east until I can see the east colony on the horizon. Sometimes I underestimate the size of this island. I begin to flap harder and faster to reach the colony quicker.
It takes me only a short while to finally be hovering over the colony. They usually Don't welcome me there, but this time there isn't anyone to groan at me or roll their eyes, there is no one at the colony. I touch down in the town centre, there is nothing but dead silence. I walk to the colony's Superior. Both the east and west colony's have their own village Superiors, and the northern village, where I live, also has its only village Superior, but my mother outranks all of them, since she is the Superior of the island.
I knock on the door of the building, no answer. I knock once more and suddenly, footsteps approach the door. The metal nob creaks and the door opens. I place my hand over my cut to keep it hidden.
"Hello Superior Ryeighnér." I say politely and kneel down in front of her, still with my hand over my cut.
"Stand." She groans. Its not that the Superiors don't like me, its that I have the markings is what makes them afraid of me.
"What reason do you have for coming all the way over to the East Colony?" She mutters as she stares at my hand over my face.
"I seek information. And perhaps some medical assistance." I say, and uncover my hand, more blood drips out and onto the floor, making me feel weaker. She gasps when she lays eyes on my bruised and bleeding face.
"Robyn what have you done?!" She exclaims and rushes back over to me. I kneel back down on the floor.
"Last night I wandered off and it began to rain, I was walking around trying to find my way back to my village, when I tripped and cut my cheek. I found what plant I cut myself on this morning. Its a very beautiful plant, just taller than me, with large leaves and pink and yellow flowers all over, but I cut myself on the thorns, that are as long as my middle finger, and as thick and your door."
I pull the thorn out of my pocket and handed it to Ryeighnér, she took it from me and looked at it with a hard stare.
"This is a Urokvìn thistle, a deadly poisonous plant that is native to Urokvìn. How to got to Nijòry is an unanswered question." I nod my head, and think about how she said it was native to Urokvìn, and wait did she say it was deadly?!
"I'm sorry..." I pant, "but did you say this plant is... deadly?" My arms buckle underneath me and stop me from holding myself off the ground, I fall with a large thud.
"Robyn?! Robyn are you okay?!" Ryeighnér shouts.
"Guards, guards!" She shouts as two fit young guards come running down the stairs.
"Please assist this girl, her name is Robyn, she has been wounded by a Urokvìn thistle, and needs immediate help. This is Frejas daughter!" The shock that takes over their bodies is insane, ad they rush over to me. I give Ryeighnér a soft smile and say,
"Thank you, for not rejecting me this time." And my eyes close.
