Lucas's POV

"What do you think about him, hun?" Lilac asked me, pointing to a little boy about 4 years old. We looked at the kid who was chasing around a little girl and we cooed up until he pulled her down to the ground by her ponytail.

"Okay! Maybe not him!" I chuckle, intertwining my hand in his as we looked into different rooms of kids.

When I asked Lucas what he wanted for Thanksgiving, he said that nothing would make him happier than a family. I told him we could go back home to his house if he wanted, in which he responded that he meant for US to have a family.

It's been 6 years since we graduated and we both felt that it was a good time to start our legacy as a couple. That being said, we headed over to the nearest adoption center with hopes in finding a boy and girl.

"Oh look! She's only a year old Lu!" Lilac gushes, hand over his heart in admiration. He coos, giving her grabby hands, to which she screams and crawls away. This made Lilac of course pout, then stomp off upset that "she hated his being".

After a good half hour or so, Li was starting to get disheartened by the lack of results in finding a child who we were able to connect with. I simply kissed his wedding ring, and told him to keep on searching.

As we got to the last couple rooms, we spotted a boy and girl sitting in the corner with each other, although she was a lot younger than the supposed age group of the kids. Getting closer, we saw how protective the boy was over her and how he glared at the boys who looked at her wrong.

The lady supervisor of the room walked over, asking us if there was anything she could help us with. We asked about the story of the boy and girl and she explained to us that they were abandoned at the doorstep of the center one night a couple months ago.

When we asked to see them one-on-one, she suggested that although we could, they weren't very social and tended to run from many. Lilac was determined that they were the ones and insisted on meeting them anyways.

They were brought out and the little girl squealed as she ran over, much to the worry of the little boy. "Laynie! No run! Bad!" He scolds her gently to which she pouts but waffles back to him.

The boy took a few seconds as if analyzing us for any potential threats, before slowly coming towards us, much to the surprise of the lady. Lilac squatted down to their level, with arms open and inviting.

"Buby! Hug! Hug!" Laynie begs persistently to her brother, pointing at Lilac with big eyes. "Buby" sighs but pushes her softly towards us, in which she giggles and stumbles over to Lilac.

"Laynie likes you", the little boy says with a small smile before coming over with ease. "That's rare!" He plays with his hands and I notice a motorcycle fall out of his pocket. I grin, going over and picking it up before sitting in front of him.

"You know bud, I drive one of these things!" I exclaim, vrooming it around which earns me another smile from the boy. He pops down by me, forgetting about worrying over the little girl and truly enjoying himself.

It didn't take long for us to fall in love with the little children, and within a half hour we could tell they had started to warm up to the idea of us. Laynie cried when we said we had to go and that was the deciding factor: they wanted us, equally if not more, just like we wanted them.

We asked the kids what they wanted if they came home with us and Laynie said she wanted a new doll and "bolowing book" with crayons. "Buby", who we found out was actually Toby, said he wanted a ride on my motorcycle and some new dinosaurs. They four of us got quickly attached and within a week later, we had a room set up for them.

Our family of two had doubled and we knew our lives would never be the same again.
Our families came over and met the little ones, falling in love with them almost as fast as we had.

Laynie was the wild child and took advantage of any situation to have spotlight on her. Toby in the other hand, stayed close by us and refrained from interaction in the large group, but was more than glad to hang out with a few at a time.

They were our devilish angels and the monsters adapted quickly to living with us. Every morning we woke up at 7:30 together and had "bweakwest" as Laynie liked to say, and Buby got to pick a Veggie Tales show to watch as we ate.

Soon enough, it was thanksgiving day and we were all sitting around the table. We went around and asked each other what they were grateful for. Lilac and I said that we were blessed to have the kids, Laynie was happy for her "pink pwincess dwess", and Buby loved his "totally epic car bed".

We soon realized the mistakes we had made as new parents when Laynie got whipped cream in her hair and pumpkin pie in her nose. Luckily Buby was more sophisticated and only dirtied his clothes, which could be put in the laundry.

                         Later that night.....

As we shut the door to their room and headed back to ours, I looked over to see Li in tears. I pulled him to me as he cried into my chest. Neither of us needed to speak. I knew he was overwhelmed with joy and his tears were of happiness and not sorrow.

I carried him to our bed, where we snuggled and I confessed how thankful I was for everything he had done as my husband until he fell asleep with his tear-stained face smiling.

I turned off our lamp before holding him close, dosing off into sleep just moments later, truly thankful for the life we have now...even if in a couple hours the kids will wake us up.

               Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃🍁
