There was a time

I slice through her flesh with a knife, lips pulled back in a grimace. A quiet whine, a primitive sound, echoes from deep within my chest, and I watch as she hits the ground.

"You're weak." I snarl, spitting at the ground. "Utterly useless."

She smiles slightly up at me, blood loss having weakened her so much that she could not move.

"I never stood a chance, did I?" Her voice is thin, barely audible, and she barely manages to get the words past her dry lips.

"That's the thing." My voice cracks and comes out as hardly more than a whisper. "There was a time... There was a time when you did." With those words, I pull my gun from its holster, pointing it directly at her forehead.

"Time for the pain to stop. Lucky."

My finger moves on its own. My entire body is completely numb, void of all feeling. The gun goes off, and the bullet drives through her head.

"I wish this end was two-sided. I wish that the pain would stop for both of us. I'm not wounded, don't worry. Well, I don't think I am. Not in the traditional sense. A broken soul isn't necessarily a wound, right?" I murmur as I stare up at the stars that dot the dark sky. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry for the person I've become. I'm sorry for everybody who's had to meet this version of me. Most of all, I'm sorry about what I've done."
