I sit, listening as the rain pours outside. It's peaceful. The way that I can feel every rumble of thunder, no matter how small, is soothing. I wish every night was like this. I lean my head back against the wall. I call feel it slowly pull the heat from my scalp, despite my hair being in the way.
Lightning flashes in the window, illuminating the room. For a split second, everything is tinted white. It's beautiful. Then the light disappears, with a roll of thunder coming not far behind.
I close my eyes and smile, remembering the countless hours spent sitting in the near darkness of the back porch at night, listening to the rainfall and watching the skies be split with blinding streaks of energy. I remember a grin that I could feel stretched across my face growing with every roll of thunder. I remember the way that I could see the lights inside flick on again as everybody else went inside, but I stayed, watching and waiting for as long as I could, feeling the breeze whip my hair around. I remember the pure joy those nights would bring.
As I lay there, reminiscing about days long past, tears start to well up in my eyes. The memories are bittersweet, from a time long gone. It pains me to think about them, but it feels as though my heart is being ripped from my chest when I push them away.
Instead of doing either, I roll over and close my eyes, hoping for sleep to come soon.
