Tall, thin figures move around the room, many paired with figures with wide skirts of varying colors. Everything from deep blue to forest green to snow white. Some figures move together, spinning slowly as they dance from one side of the room to the other, while others stand by the side, discussing everything under the sun.
At the head of the room stands a magnificent staircase. Glistening white rails contrast the black marble stairs that seem to individually contain the night sky leading to an immaculate dark wooden floor, shimmering with the light of a dozen crystal chandeliers hanging from the high ceiling. A herald stands at attention beside the doors at the top of the staircase, ready to announce every guest worthy of announcing.
The twin doors slowly swing open, revealing two figures silhouetted against glowing candelabras. They move forward, their faces revealed at the very moment their titles are called.
"His and Her Majesties, the King and Queen!" The herald, back straight as the wood grain of the doors, announces the arrival of the hosts. A hush falls across the room. The King, in a royal blue suit, stands tall but is overshadowed by his wife.
A glistening onyx crown rests atop her head, and a matching necklace sits atop her collarbone. Cape sleeves extend to just above her wrists, exposing silken white gloves. Her raven black hair tumbles to her waist. Her dress is Victorian and long, sweeping barely above the ground. It's a beautiful, deep, blood red, with uneven black pearls sewn into the neckline.
Murmurs sweep the room. Voices, accusatory and afraid, swap rumors.
"They say she uses blood to dye her dresses..."
"I heard that she spent a shipload of gold to buy it..."
Under the fear, under the accusations, lies a single thought. Unspoken, but shared nonetheless.
She's stunning.
