"Hey Maddie," Aunt Roni said as she woke me up. "Wha-What time is it?" I said wiping my hair out of my face. "Oh no! I'm late, I gotta get going!" I shrugged the comforter off my legs. "It's ok! I called the office letting them know that I'm taking you in a little late today." She smiled at me with her beautiful wide grin. "Thanks, ok I'm going to get ready now, love you!"I rushed to grab all my papers strewn all around my room. I chugged a glass of milk that Aunt Roni set out for me and hopped into the car. She drove me to the school as fast as the carpool lane would take us, and I made it to 2nd period just before my test started.
"Thanks for letting me sleep in a little, love you! See you tonight?""Of course, have a good day at school! Go kick that tests butt." I gave her a quick side hug and dropped down out of the car.
The test ended up not being very hard and the day went by fairly quickly. After my last class I walked down with my friend Cassie to the locker room to get decked out in our school colors before the basketball game.
"Did you bring your shredded shirt?" Cassie said as she put hers on.
"Duh!" I laughed as I threw it at her.
"Hey how have you been today," she stopped giggling. "I haven't seen you all day, how's it going with Roni?" Cassie has been my best friend for a long time, and she's the only one that knows about me living with my aunt after my parents plane crashes 2 years ago.
"Good." I shrugged. " I stayed up until 3 last night though so I've been avoiding walls while trying to keep my eyes open."We decided to grab the red and white paint in the locker room and stamp on hand prints on our legs with it. When it turned 4:00 p.m we headed out to the bleachers. I ran up to a couple of our other friends who were talking to a guy in our grade and scared them from behind. " BoO!" I yelled as I knocked into them.
"Ah! They both yelled and fell over with me falling beside them. "Stop it you scare us everyday!" Jessie joked laughing as she got up. As I got up I looked down and saw some vans. Uh-oh. Then I looked up to see Johnny peering down at me.
I immediately blushed as I stood next to Jessie, embarrassed by all most tackling him along with my friends.
Cass came up from behind and stole me away from my situation. "Come in guys, let's all go get some seats.""Wow Mads, way to make a first impression." She whispered to me. "Cute but clumsy." She wiggles her eyebrows at me.
"Stoooppp. you didn't fall down at his feet." I huffed. "Why do these kind of things only happen to me." I dramatically put my hand to my forehead and pretended to faint onto her. We finally stopped laughing as the game began.
It was half time and our team was winning by 3 points. It was super fun and I was with Jessie, Cassie, and Brin. And of course Johnny stayed sitting two people down from me.
The game started up again and I was just exhausted. I put my head on Cassie's shoulder and tried not to fall asleep as the game roared on. At some points my head would fall and jerk me back awake but I would always settle back to sleeping. So there I was sleeping at a school basketball game on the bleachers next to Cassie.
Brin, who was sitting next to Johnny had a brilliant idea while looking at me pass out on Cassie's shoulder."Hey Johnny." She nudged him and got his attention from the game. "Look, you see Mad's?"
"Is she asleep"? He asked laughing. "That takes some some talent to fall asleep at a pep rally game!"
"Do you want to pull a little prank on her?" Brin said with a mischievous grin. Now don't get the wrong impression, Brin was a great friend but liked to pull jokes once in a while.
"Sure?" He said unsure. She whispered her plan to him. "What?! I don't even really know her! Won't she wake up?"
"Nope. Now go!"
Johnny awkwardly got up and and whispered to Cassie what Brin's prank was.
"Um I don't know, she's really tired. Plus you know, she doesn't really know you." She stopped and thought for a second. Just as Johnny walked back to his seat she said,
"Never mind do it! I'm guessing it will make her laugh!" So the plan began, she made sure I was still asleep and began to slowly switch places with Johnny. Little did I know as I was asleep, my head was now rested on Johnny Blake's shoulder.I woke up after the whistle blew and looked to my left to see not Cassie but JOHNNY. "Oh my god!" I stood and turned to leave but my foot got caught on the bleacher. Uh-oh. First I saw Johnny and then I slammed down into the bleacher and onto the ground. After the shock from falling happened pain shot through my foot and my eyes started to water. But then I looked towards my friends and realized everyone was staring at me. Wait, where was the squeaking of the basketball shoes and the pounding of the basketball? I turned my head and watched the whole gym go quiet. I hated being stared at and now the whole school was. How far had I fallen, and oh god, was I really that loud when I slammed into the ground? I tasted blood on my lip and that snapped me out of it. I got up as best as I could, and literally hobbled back to the locker room where my bag was. The locker room was thankfully empty and I sat down as my eyes overflowed with tears of frustration. How could I even do that, now the whole school will think of me as the clutz who's scared of guys. I wiggled my ankle and felt it tighten and start to shoot pain up my leg. Something was definitely hurt.
"Knock knock." It was Cassie. "I'm so sorry I agreed to switching with him, and I shouldn't have. I'm really sorry. Oh my god your lip is bleeding!"
" Yeah. I'm going to call Roni to pick me up." I grabbed my back pack and looked down out my phone. I saw "missed call" "missed call" "missed call" by a number I didn't recognize. I called my aunt and she didn't pick up, that was really weird because she always picks up. Just then I got another call so I answered it as I walked around locker room.
"Hello, is this Madeline Greene? This is Valley General hospital calling on account for Veronica Greene."
My voice shakes shakes as I say "Yes this is Madeline, is something wrong?" I start to feel
panic bubbling up."I am sorry but she has been in a car accident and you were her main contact, I am so sorry. Call if you need assistance, but Veronica is gone."
