Nicole's POV:
Today is the day. We sign the papers, and everything is over. Audrey and Ethan were with me today, but Georgia will come to be with them while Diane and I finish everything with our lawyers.
I basically cried all morning and as I was sitting on the bed in the hotel room I was staying in for a short period, Audrey walked in. I wipped my tears quickly and she came closer.
"Hey, Mommy." She looked so sad, even though she was smiling. Maybe we aren't as connected as she is with Diane, but I know and love my daughter very much.
"Hey there." She jumped onto the bed and sat next to me.
"Have you been crying?"
"Mommy is just sad because she saw something on TV, but don't you worry about it." I picked up all my strength to smile at her. I grabbed her cheek and she smiled too.
"Liar liar, pants on fire!" Audrey mocked me and I couldn't help but laugh. She laughed too.
We didn't even speak after, she just hugged me to the first time in forever, like she meant it. I swear that kid never liked me as much as Diane. But the fact she looks exactly like her, it will haunt me every day.
"Momma cries too. I hear her. You need to kiss and make up."
"We'll see, babygirl. Now go, Aunty G is waiting for you probably." Audrey hopped out of the room and I braced myself for what's coming.
...
I entered the big house with my lawyer, side by side. We decided we would do this arrangement privately, in Diane's house. I didn't care about the money, all I wanted was to get to see my kids whenever I want.
I walked into the office alone, while my lawyer stayed outside to make a phone call. In the office, there was a woman standing at Diane's desk, alone. She was unfamiliar.
"Hello?"
"Oh hi, I'm Heder. Are you here to see Mrs. Porter?"
"Yes. Where is Georgia?"
"Oh, Georgia quit the job yesterday, and I'm Mrs. Porter's new assistant."
"Why did she quit?" I really wasn't expecting that.
"I think it has something to do with her ex-wife."
"Oh, you really are new."
"Excuse me?"
"I'm Nicole, the ex-wife. Well technically not yet, I'm about to be in a couple of hours."
"Oh, I'm so sorry..."
"Don't be. You didn't know."
Our conversation was interrupted when the familiar blonde entered the room. She was looking at her phone, not even noticing me. As soon as she picked her head up, she froze.
"Hi." Her voice was silent.
"Hi." We never broke eye contact until Diane finally spoke again.
"Could you please leave, Heder? Mrs. Porter and I need to talk." I said again while looking directly at her eyes. She was about to explain all of it.
