Chapter 8 • The Devil With No Name
I am bewildered. The tall, lanky woman stares at me with her beady pupils, which sends shivers down my spine. What did she mean when she said "after all of these years?" She knows me? I've never seen someone; no, something like her before. Her animal-like appearance would be remembered if I have met her. Or maybe, she was in a different form at the time...
The thoughts, and wonders overflow my mind, leaving me open for the enemy to attack. She sprints over so fast it seems like she's flying, and kicks me in the stomach. I topple over and lay on the ground, blood splattering from my mouth each time I cough. I can barely get up, and I already feel tired. A burning sensation creeps in, and it feels like each and every bone in my body has broken yet again.
What is this? I question to myself, panicking. This girl has already beaten me with one blow? What is this immense power?
I can barely stand on my two feet. Panting, I look up at her, now only centimeters away from my crippled body. I glare at her and gather up all of the strength I can, swinging my fist full of beaming light towards her face.
"Iron fist of the..." I yell, preparing for my attack. "Light Dragon!"
There is barely a gap in between her face and my blast, but she slyly stops it with ease.
"Fast!" I mouth to myself. "She's too fast!"
Her foot collides with my jaw, and with force, she kicks me into the already ruined home she created. I hear and feel my jaw crack, and tears roll down my eyes from the pain. I can barely move my mouth. Breathing heavily, I stand up from the ground and kick the wood blocking my path.
"Hm, what happened to the girl that just caught me off guard a couple of minutes ago? Is she not as strong as I thought?" the woman hissed, following with a maniacal laugh. I attempt to move my mouth and speak, but the pain is too unbearable.
"Why aren't you talking? Are you too astonished by my strength to respond in words?" she asked. Then, as if she just realized something, she began guffawing once again. "Oh! Or is it because of my hit to your jaw? How weak, I hope all Fairy Tail members aren't as helpless as you!"
"Don't," I croaked, my jaw moving slightly with every syllable that escapes my mouth. The injury stings even more. "Insult. Fairy Tail!" I exclaim as loudly as I can. I limp towards the woman with my wounded legs, step by step. "How, dare, you?" My voice sounds like one of a monster's.
The enemy guffaws, the noise terribly horrifying. I can feel my fragile bones scrape against each other as I slowly move, the pain insufferable with every step I take. I find the courage to take in the pain; to challenge it. I promise to myself that I will not let my aching body overpower the determination in my heart.
Too easily, the woman forms a black sphere of magic in her hand and throws it at me. The power hits me right in the chest, the oxygen escaping my lungs as I fall back to the ground. In less than a nanosecond, the woman appears right in front of me and withdraws a gold-studded, tall sword from her mouth. I squirm in fear and disgust. She holds the point of the weapon right at my heart, and I begin to panic. My body is unable to move at this point, and tears begin streaming down my face.
I don't want to die, I plead to myself, hoping the woman has telekinesis to top off her extreme power. I don't want to die, please, don't kill me! Her countenance is the same malevolent one as before. She makes no remark either; I now know she can't intercept my thoughts. I am relieved and saddened at the same time. I gather up all my strength to create a blast in my palm, but nothing surfaces. Finally, I look up at the sky for the sun, to see if I can eat some of its light. However, the area in the forest we're in receives no rays from the sun; either it is bad luck, or my foe knows me way too well. Suddenly, a humongous cloud covers the blue sky up ahead, and now it's pitch black. I can no longer see the woman, and I don't know when she's going to strike.
"What a pathetic fight," she finally announces, the voice all the more terrifying since I detect her figure. "You're too weak. Too naive when it comes to battle. But you have potential. Not the most potential I've ever seen, but you have potential. I won't kill you right now. If you survive this, we'll fight again. If you don't, then," she snickered. "Oh well."
I softly sigh in relief. I hear footsteps, and I'm glad, overjoyed that she's leaving. Suddenly, however, I feel a sharp pain in my arm, and blood trickling down onto the dead grass.
"I didn't mean I would stop torturing you, though," she chuckles, and pure fear envelopes my thoughts. "Let's play a game. Shall we commence?" She stabs me again in my shoulder, and I feel my blade crack. I screech in agony, my jaw in even more pain than it already is from the yell.
"These are the directions," she continues. I tighten my fists in the grass, trying to stand up with only willpower. It isn't working. I'm horrified.
"You know how I explained to you I'll leave you here, and you can live or die here? I'm going to make it more fun." Again, I feel a stabbing pain in my other arm, then my leg, then foot. "I'll see how much pain you can endure."
Sometimes it takes a while, other times, she stabs me again in less than a second. I have no idea when she strikes again, since it's pitch dark. She continues, and continues to stab me with her sword and kick me. After stabbing my thigh for the fifth time, I hear her withdraw her sword.
"I can feel it, the sun will be coming out soon," she says. "It's time to part ways. I'll see you later, or maybe I won't." Then, I feel her presence disappear, as if she simply vanished before my eyes.
I can't move. Not out of only pain, but terror as well. It's hard for me to breathe. Every anonymous step I hear, I scream, regardless of my broken jaw. When I realize it's just an animal, I feel relieved once again. Blood is escaping my body, but slowly. That monster was intelligent; she stabbed me enough to kill me if I was weak, but stabbed me too little to die if I am strong.
"I need to live, for Fairy Tail," I mouthed to myself subtly. "I need to live, I need to live!"
I hold on, grasp onto life desperately with all of my remaining strength. I just have to wait for the sun to come out. And no matter how bitter it is, I have to eat its light.
A couple hours fly by, my condition worsening. Finally, the bright sun comes out, and it's golden rays peak through the leaves on the mountainous trees. Hungrily, I eat the rays from the sun, it's horribly bitter taste causing me to cringe. After I'm full and my energy is restored, I stand up from the ground. Regardless of my renewed strength, it hurts to stand; it hurts to stay up as well. I'm not sure why, but my heart is racing fiercely. I have a feeling the devil is coming out to torture me even more; to kill me. My hands don't stop shaking. I traipse in long glides with an evident limp. Blood continues to seep through my moderately closed wounds. I see a stream not too far away, and I run as fast as I can at the moment to the body of water.
I sit down, and pain is prominent as I do so. I cup my hands side to side and place them in the water, then I take them out. Clean water is in my hands, unfortunately now mixed with the blood and dirt from before. It doesn't concern me too much, and I drink the water in my hands. I feel refreshed, and I dive for more. Subsequently, I wash my wounds with the clear water to take out all of the bacteria. I then take off my sweater so that my blue long-sleeved shirt is conspicuous. I rip the cloth into long, thick pieces, saddened since this is my favorite article of clothing. I then wrap the cloth around my wounds tightly; by the time all of my injuries are taken care of, there's no more cloth left. Promptly, I turn to my left and notice a fish swimming in the water. I ravenously snatch it swiftly, and hold it in my hands as the fish flaps its tail and head in my hands.
Once it is completely dead, I place it on the ground and pick up sticks and rocks to make a fire, wishing that Natsu comes out of nowhere to make the fire for me. I know this is unrealistic, so I attempt to make the fire myself, which is a lot more complicated than I originally believed. Once the fire is made, I cook my piece of fish.
I theorized that with some food in my stomach I will be more tranquil, but after I finish my fish, I still feel uneasy. My body still doesn't stop shaking. Maybe when I get some sleep later... I assume in my head. I stand up, put out the fire, and keep walking to find some sort of civilization. My paranoia is only getting worse and worse, and my heart is only beating quicker and quicker. I have to support myself on the barks of trees so I don't collapse. I look up ahead and see a few homes made out of straw, with the Galuna civilians strolling throughout the campus. I sigh in ultimate relief and walk faster. Finally, I can find my friends again.
