Chapter 5 • Galuna Island

The island is bigger than expected. When Erza and I land onto the vast island, I glance around at the nature unfolded in front of us. I smell sea and the light green leaves on the towering trees above. The sand beneath our feet is a pale yellow, and the grains enter my shoes, making me feel uncomfortable. The grass is a dark forest green, with hints of brown sprinkling the ground. The wind whistles as it dances through the air, and it leaves me shivering. I usually get cold easily. Erza looks at me and she nods. Together, we walk up the small hill further into the depths of the dangerous land.

Erza and I find ourselves in a large, vast forest full of trees and wild plants. Countless animal calls fill the eerie silence. Erza swiftly takes her sword out, in case we get into any trouble along the road. We continue to walk through the forest, but with caution.

Suddenly, the forest begins to become darker and darker with each careful step we take. I glance around, then at the sky, and I notice that the sky is no longer visible. Only a small beam of light from the sun is peaking out behind the trees. I open my hand and create a small, golden light in the palm of my hand, bright enough to let us see what's ahead.

Erza nods at me. "Good job, Elzie," she says to me. She definitely understands that I've never been on an S-Class trip before. If that's her way of making me feel better, it's not working.

I nod back. "Thanks," I say to her.

I hope the darkness subsides soon. My light in shining bright, which means that I have a full supply of magic power. If I stay at this for too long, I won't have any light to fight with, I say to myself, worried.

Fighting. Not once in my time in Fairy Tail have I thought about the chance of having a real battle, with real enemies, and actually give myself a challenge. All of the missions I take are the easiest of the easiest, and I regret every single time I took a simple mission. Although I have to do less work on those, what's the point? I'm not even sure if I have what it takes to protect my comrades, since I slacked off so much. Now, at this exact time, any second we can be ambushed. What will happen if I can't fight?

After a few more minutes, we begin to see the light blue sky and the white, puffy clouds sprinkled in as well. The forest begins to get brighter and brighter. I sigh in relief. No trouble. At least, not yet.

"Up ahead!" Erza exclaims, as if she's a general in a war leading her soldiers to victory. She walks faster and I catch up to her.

"So all my light isn't going to go to waste," I mumble to myself, quietly so that Erza cannot here. I look at the magic in my hand, and see that it's original golden appearance has gotten duller. Oh great, I think to myself. I have barely any light left. I extinguish the light so that it doesn't get any dimmer. We finally exit the forest, and we find a small town.

Numerous homes are scattered throughout the open area. They are all made of completely natural resources, and the town looks quiet and peaceful. A myriad of people walk around throughout, and they are all wearing clothing similar to a native people's style. This alone tells me that these people inhabited Galuna for quite a while.

I stand in the shade of the tree, watching the humans go on with their normal routine. I'm in deep thought, wondering why this place is haunted. They aren't even real demons! Was it a fake S-Class mission? Are they wizards? Did they kidnap Natsu and the others? There's only one way to find out.
